The Messier to NYR deal was big, also the massive Gilmour to Toronto deal people often forget about imo. Frank Mahovlich to Detroit for Norm Ullman was a massive deal in its time.

Then there was Phil Esposito, Fred Stanfield and Ken Hodge to Boston in exchange for Pit Martin, Gilles Marotte and Jack Norris to Chicago.

this deal majorly helped the Canucks in the early 90s:

To St. Louis:
Dan Quinn
Garth Butcher

To Vancouver:
Geoff Courtnall
Robert Dirk
Cliff Ronning
1992 5th round pick (Brian Loney)

A few more:

1947: Max Bentley and Cy Thomas from Chicago to Toronto for Gus Bodnar, Bud Poile, Gaye Stewart, Ernie Dickens, and Bob Goldham. 28-year-old two-time Ross and one-time Hart winner and a throw-in for five solid players.

1964: Andy Bathgate and Don McKenney from New York to Toronto for Dick Duff, Bob Nevin, Arnie Brown, Bill Collins, and Rod Seiling. Future HOF'er and a veteran defensive forward for several younger guys, all of whom went on to have long NHL careers.

1976: Phil Esposito and Carol Vadnais from Boston to New York for Jean Ratelle, Brad Park, and Joe Zanussi. One star centre and defenseman for another. Worked out reasonably well for both teams, but a slight edge to Boston because Park lasted longer than the others.

1990: Chris Chelios and a 2nd rounder from Montreal to Chicago for Denis Savard. Savard won a cup with the Habs, but the price was huge.

I'd say that Shanahan to Detroit made more of an impact than Bourque to Colorado.

Another deal that I think may have been important to the Canucks was Todd Bertuzzi, Bryan McCabe and 3rd round selection (Jarkko Ruutu) to Vancouver for Trevor Linden.

Reading this thread, it appears that, with the exception of Lard_Lad, everyone here defines "NHL history" starting in the mid-1990s. :lol

If the definition of "biggest" includes "most impactful," two trades that certainly deserve Top Ten consideration are:

- Butch Goring to NYI from LA for Dave Lewis and Billy Harris, March 1980.

- Ron Francis and Ulf Samulesson to Pittsburgh from Hartford for Zarley Zalapski and John Cullen, March 1991.

Both deal had direct and immediate positive effects, as NYI and Pittsburgh both won their first Stanley Cups within months of those deals, with all of the acquired players playing major roles.

And you just realized this? (Actually, lowetide mentioned a couple of 60's deals.)

Perhaps some confused 'after the Gretzky trade' as the time period rather than the ranking

In 1981, this one instantly took the Caps from laughing stock to respectability:

Washington got:
Rod Langway
Brian Engblom
Craig Laughlin
Doug Jarvis

Montreal got:
Ryan Walter
Rick Green

not sure about all the extras (if any), but i think Shanahan from NJ to Stl for Scott Stevens is a pretty significant one..

I always liked this one too.

06-Feb-98: New York Islanders traded Todd Bertuzzi, Bryan McCabe and 3rd round selection (Jarkko Ruutu) in 1998 to the Vancouver Canucks for Trevor Linden.
