The Roy trade was not only super bad because of throwing in Keane, but it might not have been necissary if they had cooled things over with Roy and Montreal should have been able to get Deadmarsh off of the Avs. (I was amazed when his name wasn't on the trade.)

To Florida:
Luongo and Jokinen
To Long Island
Parrish and Kvasha

Mad Mike ends up picking another goaltender with his first so that was a lateral move at best, but DiPietro has taken an extra few years to develope. The oppotunity cost was either taking Heatly or Gaborik with that pick. Jokinen blossoms in Florida

To Colorado
Ray Bourque
Dave Adreychuk
To Boston
Sami Pahlson
Martin Grenier
Brian Rolston
1st round pick (Martin Sameulson)

Colorado gets a cup out of this deal a year later, Sinden got sold a bill of goods on Pahlson even at their most hyperbolic Avs management never talked him up like Skinflint Harry did, ends up unloading him inside of a year, Grenier hasn't panned out, Rolston's stock was at a low when he hit Boston but found his hands there, Sameulson is still in the AHL.

With all of the teams after Bourque, there had to be better trades out there for Happy Time Harry.

St.louis signs Scott Stevens gives Washington five first round picks as compensation
St.Louis signs Brendan Shannahan and botches the arbitration hearing with New Jersey, the Devils are awarded Scott Stevens.

Lou Lam was able to get Stevens in part because St.Louis was offering up CuJo and Brind'Amour as compensation, he argued he had plenty of goalies.

I don't know...I always thought the deal we made for Chris Chelios in exchange for Anders Ericsson wasn't too shabby.

Giguere for a 2nd is one of the best deals in Ducks history. A Conn Smythe and one of the greatest goaltending displays in NHL history was well worth Matt Pettinger.

Another great deal was Friesen, Tverdovsky(both wanted out of Anaheim) and Maxim Balmochynk(the next Russian superstar ) for Sykora, Igor Pohanka, Mike Commodore and J-F Damphousse(both were traded for Rob Niedermayer). Also, Ozolinsh and Ward for Matt Cullen, Pavel Trnka(both didn't receive their qualifiers today) and a 4th(James Pemberton) was very good.

Thankfully Calgary balanced that one off with Jordan Leopold for Andrei Nazarov and a 2nd.

And didn't we trade the 2nd we got for Miikka Elomo? Man that trade looks uglier and uglier everyday.

Oh man, no question. Particularly seeing as Zubov wasn't cheap, he (and Nedved) cost us Luc Robitaille and Ulf Samuelsson, then Craig Patrick goes and trades him for a cream puff. Nedved got us Kovalev (good deal) but then Kovalev got us Rico Fata.

Trade steals? Any trade involving Wayne Gretzky - easy steal for the team that got him (LA, STL). I guess you can never win when you trade away the best player of all time.

some great ones mentioned here but I"m sure there are some other huge ones out there, like:

Calgary Flames traded Brett Hull and Steve Bozek to the St. Louis Blues for Rob Ramage and Rick Wamsley.

Washington Capitals dealt Gaetan Duchesne, Alan Haworth, and a 1st to the Quebec Nordiques for Dale Hunter and Clint Malarchuk. The 1st rounder turned out to be Joe Sakic

The Quebec Nordiques traded Bryan Fogarty to Pittsburgh Penguins for Scott Young

and one of my personal favourites:

The New-York Rangers dealt a 5th round pick with Mike Donnelly to the Buffalo Sabres for Paul Cyr and a 10th round pick in the 1988 draft (Eric Fenton). The 5th rounder turned out to be Alexander Mogilny

In my opinion, the Lindros deal with the Nords and Flyers is the most one-sided in history.

MAY 15, 1967
Boston gets: Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield
Chicago gets: Pit Martin, Gilles Marotte, and Jack Norris
Esposito goes on to win 5 of the next 7 scoring titles.

MAY 26, 1976
Boston gets: Rick Middleton
Rangers get: Ken Hodge
Hodge plays 96 games in 2 years then retires
Middleton playes 12 years and scores about 400 goals in a Bruins uniform.

the Nordiques. Forsberg alone became arguably a better placer than Lindros ever was. Plus all the other quality players in there, plus a lot of cash.

I disagree that this is a steal for Dallas....Hatcher made the All-Star team with Pittsburgh. Hatcher was a great D-man...He was older than Zubov, so Zubov is still playing while Kevin is retired, but the Pens didn't fit well for Zubov, and they got a regular All-Star in return!!....How is that a steal for Dallas????

it was Zubrus, Linden and a 2nd to Washington for Zednik, Bulis and a 1st to Montreal. The first for the Habs became Perezhogin, i believe, who is one of the Habs' top prospects. I think the WSH 2nd was traded? Anyone can confirm this?

Overall, Montreal still got the better of the deal for sure.

Philadelphia gets: Mark Howe (maybe the best Flyers defenseman ever) and a pick that is used for Derrick Smith (seven years as a Flyer).

Hartford gets: Ken Linseman (dealt that same day to Edmonton for Risto Siltanen who spent 4 years with the Whalers and Brent Loney who never appeared in the NHL), Greg Adams (one year as a Whaler), a 1st round pick used to select David Jensen (69 NHL games, 13 for the Whalers) and a pick used to take Leif Karlsson (never appeared in the NHL).

May 22, 1970
Another steal is how Guy Lafleur became a Canadiens' player. The link below details the transaction. Basically, Montreal dealt Ernie Hicke and their first round pick (used to take Chris Oddleifson) in 1970 for Francois Lacombe, cash and California's first pick in 1971 (number one pick overall, used to take Lafleur). Lacombe was a steal. Whatever happened to that Lafleur fellow though?

Yep thats the one....I agree, pretty fair deal if ya ask me....
Even if you DO think it favors the Caps, only a homer could qualify it as a "steal"
