Aside from Malkin not coming back, this Pens team when healthy will be dangerous. (if Crosby returns that is)

As for next year, if Kovalev will take 2-2.5 million for a one year contract, we could be looking at this:

Kunitz-Crosby-Neal
Malkin-Staal-Kovalev
Cooke-Letestu-Kennedy
Adams-Jeffrey-Vitale

Orpik - Letang
Martin - Michalek
(Lovejoy/Engelland/Bortuzzo/Depres) - Niskanen

That's a pretty damn solid lineup.

They probably should have!

James Neal, Kovalev, and Niskanen for Goligoski and a 7th rounder?

Wow. Just wow.

kovalev back to pitts...

the place where he had his best years as a premier superstar

hes gonna make an unprecedented comeback and dethrone Crosby.

The Pens are one of the best defensive teams in the NHL but they are playing with fire this week.

I guess if you're Ray Shero you can turn Goligoski and a conditional 7th round pick into Neal, Niskanen and Kovalev.

Is there a best GM trophy at the end of the year?

Meh, the team still has a very strong group of defensive forwards and we'll probably have to protect the 3rd pairing a little bit more though Engelland has stepped up well with the injuries and trades.

Honestly, if kovy wants to stay in the NHL he'd probably be thrilled to make 2 mill.

As long as he's gone and we got something I don't really care at this point. The fact that it was a 7th means that Kovie's NTC was probably in the way. You can't honestly tell me no other team would have offered a guaranteed 6th for Kovalev?

Pretty low risk with possible decent reward. At the very least he should help on the PP. Plus the fans here still love him and he likes playing here. Great move by Shero

You are seeing, for the first time, Ray Shero with no financial constraints. The man can really work a deal.

You forgot to mention he was coming off of major knee surgery in the offseason. I'm not saying that AK is consistent or a hard worker, but I think that people fail to recongize how difficult it is to come back from major knee surgery as quickly as players do now a days (Michalek's another example).

It's a lot more impressive if you take out Kovalev and the 7th rounder...

Why would OTT have had to take a contract back for a rental?

For a couple of reasons.

1.) This team has lacked talented wingers for a while. We are tired of watching Dupius and Guerrin whiff while having open nets. While Kovy is an enigma, he is very, very talented regardless.
2.) This is a very low risk trade. If it doesnt work out then it's not that big of a deal.
3.) The Pens PP has been very bad and since they traded Gogo they needed even more help. Even if Kovy doesnt help a ton even strength he should help on the PP.
4.) Pens fans are very nostalgic and Kovy had some big years with the Pens. People still wear Kovy jerseys to the games to this day. He is and has always been very well liked here (unlike say Jagr).
5.) We cant score any goals right now with Crosby and Malkin out. Any player who has a history of putting the puck in the net is going to excite Pens fans right now.

I bet he does well in Pittsburgh and then all the anti-Kovalev Montreal fans who have bashed him all along are going to go bi-polar and blame PG for not picking him up.
