When I first started liking this team it was soon after the uniform switch (and after the Whalers had officially moved to Carolina) to these, so they'll mean more to me than I'd say most Sabres fans. The blue & gold are iconic and the origins, but I'll always love the Angry Goat Head. But we'll leave it at that. And yes, I'll agree that everything and anything was better than the slug...except for maybe the red butterknife alternates. Yuck.
The Goathead jerseys automatically go to the bottom of the all-time list, simply because the color scheme was totally wrong. Red and black are completely unimaginative colors for a sports team, and the Sabres already had perfectly good colors. Red and black are not Buffalo Sabres colors.
The black jerseys are the worst all-time Sabres jersey, and the red alternates are right behind them.
The Slug wasn't a good logo, but at least those uniforms were in the right color range.
If the dates in the title are correct, I was 7 when the AGH came into existence. Even though I've always associated "Sabres" with the blue&gold originals, that was the jersey I became a real fan to, so it'll always have a special place.
i have a feeling with a new owner will be new uniforms
Pegula is an old-time Sabres fan who fell in love with the French Connection Sabres of the late 70s.
I highly doubt he is going to do anything to stray much from the original recipe. If anything, he might change the current unis to make them more like the originals.
I also don't think that Pegula is the type of owner to change the uniforms every five years or so as a cynical business move. You know, just changing them for the short-term infusion of cash from the boost in merchandise sales.
When I think original jerseys, I think the teams of my childhood in the 80's and 90's that lost in the first round every year. Back then there were less teams and 4 out of 5 teams in each division made the playoffs, so a first round exit then is the equivalent of 9th or 10th place today.
When they switched to the Goathead, they won the division and beat Ottawa in the first round the first year, went to the conference finals the second year, and went to the cup finals the third year. I will always associate the Goatheads with success for that reason.
