Sens offer extension to Phillips - awaiting response

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=355370

Quote:
The Senators have made the blueliner a contract offer and Phillips's agent JP Barry expects to discuss it with his client after Friday's game against the Buffalo Sabres.

It's possible the two sides could agree on an extension as early as Saturday but if Phillips doesn't approve of the offer, he could be traded before Monday's deadline.

hopefully it's Murray going all-in with a one-year 700k contract.

wow, another big ticket item in Ottawa is being played out through the press...seems like Murray didnt learn his lesson on Spezza, Redden, Heatley and now Phillips, surprise surprise....

Hope Phillips signs, but it shouldn't be done though the press ].

Can't wait for Murray to be gone to the retirement home were he belongs...

I bet the offer is low in both years and $$$. And it should be. Phillips has had a poor year and has like 5 points all year.

I am guessing 3 years $7.5-8 million. Take it or leave it. I think he might accept that kind of contract. Depends how badly he does not want to leave Ottawa he would likely get more elsewhere.

Bruce Garrioch makes a pretty good point. With Ottawa playing tonight and tomorrow this contract extension/trade is really gunna come down to the wire.
I really hope Phillips re-signs and Kuba is somehow traded

It'll be interesting to see how committed he really is to the rebuild.

Good, Id like to keep him around, we gotta have SOME veterans on this team. I could be way off base, but I think a cap hit of 3m per year would be fair for both sides given Phillips play this season.

True true. I don't know what ppl are complaining about, overrated or not he's worth 3 mil on the cap or less. He's just not a guy who should be on your top pairing. Pay him like a 4th guy and I'm all good. I'm borderline at 3 million on cap.

Don't like him anymore. Hasn't been good for a while. Has only become worse without volchenkov/chara.

Wish him luck somewhere else.

This offer better be like 1 mil.

Everything under 2.5 per season would be a lack of respect and a major slap to the face of Chris Phillips... He is a 13 NHL seasons veteran and played a big role in this team past success. The average NHL salary is around 3M$ per season per player nowadays. People expect Phillips at 2.0M$??? That's why Murray is so terrible at signings I guess. The common hockey fan, what does he really know? Jack-all is my opinion

3 mill per is fine by me. I also think Chris Phillips deserves a little bit more respect than some of you people are giving him. Then again I am not surprised.

I don't mind signing him to help mentor Cowen, but it better not be any longer than 2-3 years and no more than 2.75M. I appreciate that he wants to help with the rebuild and he has been a good soldier for the team, but he has lost a step and any more length or term would be a mistake now.

Wut?

Fans aren't going to turn on him because he wants to stay here.

He is still quite popular and can help out hte franchise quite a bit.

I suspect Murray is gonna trade Kuba if Phillips signs.

To me it reeks of Goldfish mentality, were horrible this year, Phillips has been pretty bad overall, its a down year for him that is all. If we keep him hopefully he shuts some people up next year with his play, if not and he pulls a Redden, then Ill eat crow.

Why is that? Because we're going to be cap strapped the next season or two?

I agree with one of the above posters that Phillips shouldn't be relied upon on the first pairing. Move him down to the 2nd pairing where he's played the majority of his career and he will do fine.

If you think you can replace Phillips for 1M, your sadly mistaken.

I'm hoping either 2 years 3-3.5M (that way he's 34 when it's up, prime for a retirement contract)...

Or a retirement contract backloaded so it's good for Eugene (since it'll keep the annual salary lower while we're rebuilding) which averages out to 2.75-3M.

A deal in the 3-5 year range would be a bit awkward since any multi-year extensions would be subject to the 35+ rule and probably not long enough to see any significant reduction in cap hit compared to a 2 year deal.
