Give him 4 per for the next 2-3 years....who cares....
we aren't spending near the cap. Eugene's money folks. May even do it to screw with other teams for the next couple of years and set the bar higher throwing salaries in chaos!!!
Dammit. I really don't want Phillips here. Physical "defensive" defensemen don't do anything for wins. They don't even do anything for goals against. Frankly, if Phillips is back, he's just eating salary and a roster spot from a younger player with more upside. I don't want him "mentoring" Cowen, I want Cowen to be his own player, not learning stuff from Phillips. Sentimental value or not, extending Phillips is a mistake but I can understand doing so ONLY if it's no more than 2 years and/or over 2.5 million per.

What? I appreciate Phillips commitment to the Sens but we need to get younger and more skilled; the opposite of Phillips. As for my stance on defensive or physical defensemen, do the math, you'll see that hits and block shots mean nothing to winning and Phillips has hardly been the same positional beast we know and love. His completely void offense doesn't help if he can't even shutdown effectively.

Apparently someone forgets Edmonton's cup run... that I think started the trend of the shot block (or at the very least popularized it... and they were one referee call away from a cup).

I don't even really know what we're investing in if we re-sign him. Still want him to go to playoff team and show what he can do, and of course a pick or prospect wouldn't hurt either.
I guess another thing to consider is that any gentleman's agreement between Murray and Phillips to re-sign him in the summer assumes Bryan will still be the GM.
At the same time if Murray trades Phillips and Chris feels insulted would he hold that against a new GM in Ottawa?
Anyone who is hoping for a short-term contract will be very disappointed if he signs an extension. If he does sing an extension before the trade deadline, the contract will for sure be for around 4 or 5 years, potentially more, like 6 or 7. The longer the contract the lower the cap hit. Chris Phillips is only 1 level below Alfredsson on this team. He has been a leader on our team for years and will want to finish his career here.
It also wouldn't surprise me if Phillips and Murray agree on a number and a term for which they will resign him, and then Phillips is traded with the promise of giving him that contract on July 1st.
That said, wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he does.
If the contract is for 3 years or less, who cares(other than Eugene) how much we are paying him. We will not be spending to the cap anytime soon. At least for the next 2 years. We have to show respect to players that have been with our team this long.

This is the thing I will never understand. Phillips and Murray should have an agreement. Phillips goes and garners a 2nd rounder (or better). Phillips comes back next year and Murray gives him an extra year, or an extra mill/year for his troubles.
A first or second rounder is worth a million in my books...
Phillips says he wants to be part of the rebuild? Demonstrate it PLEASE, Chris!!
