Dallas Stars Claim Brandon Segal from LA Kings

Dallas claims Brandon Segal via multiple tweets from TSN, Fourth Period, etc.

Segal's Bio: http://www.forecaster.ca/thestar/hockey/player.cgi?2734

He is signed to a 2 year contract (ends after next season) worth $550,000 per year ($130,000/AHL).

I literally know nothing about this guy, but I'd imagine he's a grinder type player.

"Lawman" is a grinder, he'll fight and go to the net. Think Jeff Cowan.

Are we gonna waive Barch to make room for him?

If he can skate without falling down , he is +1 over Barch

I asked on the Kings board about Segal and here are some of their comments on him (I asked if he could replace Barch):

plays his role well, good on his angles with the body on the forecheck... knows where to be. scored his first goal this season - limited skill... lotta energy.

Regular waivers or re-entry?

If it's regular, he may just be Austin fodder.

No. Dallas cannot put him in Austin without waiving him. If they do waive him, LA would have priority to assign him to the AHL (See Bourque from WAS to PIT to WAS earlier this season).

He doesn't have to replace anyone. The Stars have never carried less than 14 forwards this year. With Wandell gone for the year, he can stay on the roster the rest of the season with no problems. Wathier and Sawada would have to go back to the AHL when Ott and Sutherby are healthy.

Don't tease me TWC. If we could trade Peterson for a pick I'd be ecstatic. It would almost certainly signal that we are absolutely sellers and the exodus of UFA players should begin.

I watched Segal play for about a season n half for the Norfolk Admirals (AHL).

He was on our No1 line here, which typically is equilvalent 4th liner in the N.

For the ladies, he looks just like Dane Cook, super hott Lol

He was one of our top producers and a fan favorite instantly here. Alot of us were upset that he didn't get resigned by TB. He was 2nd in goals for us, which I know the AHL isnt near the level of NHL, but the guy has heart and can play the corners very well and isnt afraid to nail someone right into the glass... hopefully he works out for Dallas, he has defiently earned an NHL spot

He would have to clear waivers to go down, but it's not like re-entry where he's required to stay on the NHL roster for the remainder of the season (or else... I think they have to offer him back to the waiving team? I forget exactly how that works).

This guy seems like fourth-line fodder. Maybe Barch has finally worn out his welcome or Sutherby has a much more significant injury than they initially thought.

well according to most of the stats I could pull up this guy should be a *slight* improvement over Barch / Sawada / Wathier. basically the definition of replacement level NHL player (IE. someone who should be making minimum wage).

I refuse to believe someone is worse at fighting (or skating/shooting/playing the game of hockey) than Barch.

I'd never even heard of this dude. Maybe they are just hoping he can do more than wathier/sawada. Once again NHL waivers is a compete crapshoot. Players who seem to stink get claimed while players who seem to have upside clear.

There's always more to it. Segal is cheap, and a good replacement/compliment to Petersen apparently. Especially since Sutherby is hurt, Wandell is hurt, and Barch is a waste of space.

Though you are right. But not everyone needs a plugger goalie or upside players. Which is crazy, I know.

Sutherby suffered some sort of shoulder injury during the most recent homestand.
