A 5.5+ mil cap hit for Seabrook says to me that Hjalmersson is on his way out and they'll move Leddy up to the #4 defenseman position. That'll allow then to go sign a couple of $1.5 mil defenseman in the 5 and 6 spots and still save about $500,000.
How is this overpayment? Look at what Volchenkov got, look at what Buff got. Seabrook is a better Dman than both of those guys. It's more than I would of hoped he would of signed for, but it is definitely market value. It's just too bad Chicago players don't want to take discounts. Hopefully Sharp will next year, or we will be a two line team for 5+years.
Don't know what the fuss is about. Seabrook is a legit $5.5m Dman. $6 is probably pushing it, but it's not outrageous. Lots of teams would love to have Seabrook at $6m.
Granted that makes things real tight for next year (Brouwer/Frolik/Crawford), and the year after when Sharp's contract is up.
Could Hossa become available?
Seabrook is by far our most physical defenseman, and probably one of the best defensively. He would of definitely got an offer sheet in the offseason for around 6mil, and all Chicago would of got was a 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd.
All Chicago needs to do is trade Hammer or if possible, Campbell. Hossa will not be available, he is one of our best all around players. We could lose Frolik for all I care, but Brouwer needs to stay. Crawford should be able to be signed for 1.5mil ish, I think he saw what happened to Niemi last year when he demanded more.
