There are no losses to cut. At worst, he's insurance if a scoring line player goes down.
Also, if we replace him, it shouldn't be with a healthy scratch. The dude has a 2 million dollar cap-hit. For that 2 million we could get another top 9 forward easily. Sending him down now only limits our options for improving the team in the future. It's idiocy.
Sending down JVR FOR ONE GAME against the Ottawa freaking Senators is the right move. Period.
Nik Zherdev IS a loss. He is not an insurance policy when hes no where to be found at game time. And does this team need another top 9 foward? Not really. If anything they need a checking foward.
Also what has he been most of this season? a healthy scratch, being sat over Jody Shelley.
Flyers have 10 days to send Zherdev down. They can still go that route post deadline. If they send him down now, any team that traded for him would have to clear him through re-entry waivers.
I doubt he gets traded, but maybe he gets a 7th rounder if he impresses tonight.
It's 10 games or 30 days. And I think it's 10 games he plays.
He gets a 1-game tryout to prove he has some kind of worth whether it be to us, or someone else.

Exactly. JVR can take one for the team. He'll be back tomorrow when Gus is re-assigned. They are clearly going to keep Zherdev unless something happens before the deadline.
If a good deal for a winger they think can help more than Z comes up, he either goes in the deal or gets sent down to make room for the new player. No big deal. I didn't get a chance to watch tonight's game yet, just some snippets, but it doesn't look like Z blew the doors off the place.
Gus wasn't all that bad, I'd rather him over Boynton.
In the playoffs though, you'd like to have a guy who has actually played NHL games before. Things might be different if this wasn't Gustafsson's first pro season.

Not if he sucks, which all Blackhawk fans seem to think.
Here's the thing. If you send Gus down now, you have both Gus and Boynton available for the playoffs. If you send Boynton down now, he has to go through reentry to come back for the playoffs, so a contending team could block him if they wanted to.

This is the right asset management decision.
Yeah Gust could easily come up and be the number 7. Like how Nodl got into the lineup last playoffs
