He's right, Modry's a Thrasher. Pretty good signing, I think this benefits Atlanta. I think they'd be smart to go after another defensemen, but more of a physical, defensive defensemen.

Atlanta's got a couple of regulars who are very physical.

Good signing.

Yeah, I had forgotten that.

Not knowing Atlanta's situation too well, I think they could still use someone in the Bob Boughner mode (I do remember he has been signed ). Pretty much anyone in the league could, though.

Nice activity by Atlanta.

Good point...the Thrashers needed to improve their blueline big time. Is it fairly certain that Lehtonen will make the jump next season?

Poor Thrasher fans....

He is a bad man, and he isn't John Shaft.

He sucks. Period. Take it from Kings fans who saw him suck as an All-Star.

That said I'm not shocked, Atlanta is one of the few places I think could actually use him even thought he is soooo bad.

Totally False!

Modry was the Brisebois of LA, the fans only looked at what he didn't do rather than what he did. In my opinion his positives far outweighed his negatives.

LA had the best PP in the NHL in 01-02, despite having their PP QB (Schneider) miss a good chunk of the year, who stepped in and ran the point on the PP? Modry. But the ignorant fans yelled "fluke" saying that Modry didn't score many goals and only collected secondary assists off plays by Allison and Palffy. So the next season what does Modry do, he goes out and scores double digits in goals and again hits 40 pts, this time with Allison out most of the year. The ignorant fans again started saying he wasn't physical enough since they could no longer say he couldn't score goals.

Also his leadership skills with the young Europeans on the team also can't be overlooked, ask Lubomir Visnovsky how important Modry was to his development in the NHL, or ask Alexander Frolov.

And don't think his teammates didn't appreciate it either, Modry was voted unsung hero by his teammates during the 2001-2002 season.

I agree with the emergence of Gleason and Grebeshkov it was time for Modry to go, but I find it shameful how bad a rap he gets from Kings fans, I personally say thanks to Modry for a couple of solid seasons, if people can just accept the fact that he isn't a physical force and take him for what he is, a decent puck rushing 3rd pair d-man with excellent leadership skills who was very liked by his teammates the fans in Atlanta should appreciate him.

Goodluck in Atlanta Mo, and Thank You!

I can honeslty say that 95% of Kings fans or maybe even more wanted Modry out of LA. He is horrible. He is the worlds biggest **ssy. Never uses his body infront of the net or anywhere else for that matter. As Kings fans , this was the first and only good news we got today

Nice.

Good signing by the Thrashers. If I were a fan of the team, I'd be impressed by DW's trades and signings. He's really aiming high this year and the future looks so bright, you need shades, biatch.

A trade for a solid stay at homer should be next on the adgenda.

Serious question: if Modry is so bad, why did he lead Kings defensemen in ice time the last two seasons?

Because AM seemed to think that Modry was something more than a 4-5 defenseman. . . .further proof imo that AM is a crappy coach. . . .

Addition by subtraction for the Kings

addition by subtraction

by opening up Modry's roster spot, it's like signing a Free Agent ourselves!

sorry, but Modry had ONE good year. unfortunately, his success that season made him think he was an ofensive stud, and his defensive play, which was not strong to begin with, suffered. He is constantly caught out of position, gets easily faked or skated past, and has to take a penalty as a result. Also, I can probably count on one hand how many times he's been able to keep the puck in the zone at the point.

He has a good shot now and then, but 8 out of ten shots go high or way wide, usually clearing the zone on their own.

Last season he went into a goal-scoring slump, and his overall play became incredibly bad.

as to why he led the team in ice time...God only knows. Most of us assumed he had compromising pictures of Andy Murray or something.

Good luck Jaroslav! (too bad we only play the Thrashers once or twice a year)

If we take into account Coburn will probably get serious consideration for a spot this year, the defense is starting to look very decent.

I don't think he is as bad as Kings fan make him out to be here. He's not great but I don't think the Kings are better off without him.

Obviously he's not the kind of defensemen you go after if your team is a contender and you need a #3 but it's the Thrashers. They can find a use for that guy and you get the outside chance he will surpass expectations.

It's a good acquisition (don't know if it's a good signing until I get the $$ number)

And that was Modry's fault, right?

I am happy that the Kings fans don't want him. However we have been suffering under an even worse offensive defenseman named Yannick Tremblay for the past 5 years, and I am positive Modry will be an upgrade.

To go with the big fella's like Sutton(whose hit on Allison was clean), Majesky, and Exelby, the Thrashers can now add Havelid, Modry, and Tjarqvist. Throw in Kloucek, and perhaps Kaberle and Coburn, it isn't a bad corps to throw out there. A nice little mix of everything.

I think DW did a great job in addressing the puck handling weakness of the Thrashers D corps. And now it is time to settle on a 2nd line C.

No he didn't. Modry is a guy who tries, you'll be sick of him just as you're sick of Yannick Tremblay.

If Modry was really that good, a 2-time all-star, with big minutes, why would Kings fans be so happy to go? Because he is a terrible player, who was overrated.
