That's wrong. Just look at the faceoff numbers; he only took 265 in 82 games. For comparison, in that season Dave Scatchard took 272 in only 16 games played, which shows you how many a center would take. He's never played a full season at center and I don't believe he's ever been higher than 6th place in faceoffs taken for any team he's been on.
to be fair... faceoffs taken isn't a true indicator of "playing center".
lots of teams have one guy take the faceoff on the line, but then the responsibility of the center changes to another forward.

That's very true and may have happened with Boyes, but do you think he's a long term answer at center if he isn't good enough at faceoffs to take them full time? Also, he was 54% on draws in that limited sample size, so I would think he would have been taking them full time had he been playing center. I might be wrong because I don't really remember where and with whom he was playing in Boston.

Sure, why not? If someone on the line is better at faceoffs than Boyes, let him take them. Faceoffs aren't exactly a make or break stat for centers.

bergeron and sturm in boston, with bergeron at center
lets not 4get that Boyes is a first round draft pick 24th over all...that shows something!
It shows that when he was 17 people thought he might one day be a starter in the NHL...there are plenty of 24th overall picks that never even made it to the show. If his career was to end tomorrow, I think he'd be considered a better than average 24th over all pick...

Except we don't have any winger that can step in and take faceoffs. I'm not saying Boyes isn't going to play center here, but faceoffs are and have been an issue for this team and I don't want another poor faceoff man playing center.
And, Jame said that Boyes was on the wing in Boston, which is all I was trying to say with my original post. It wouldn't have made sense for a center winning 54% of his faceoffs (that was his percentage that year) to not take faceoffs.
Since everyone else has thrown in their 2 cents I suppose I'll do the same. I'm cautiously optimistic about this trade. If Boyes can improve his production to 25g 25a 50pts and competently play center (regardless of how good or bad his faceoff % is) the Sabres come out smelling like roses. If it doesn't work out it's 4 mil of dead weight next year and it only cost us a 2nd round pick, we'll survive. The guy has talent, let's see if Lindy can help him find it again.
If it means anything to anyone Jeremy White and Howard Simon had a guy who covers the Blues for a St. Louis radio station on this morning to talk about Boyes. The guy said that when boyes was scoring 30-40 goals alot of them were on the powerplay. Just something to take into account.
WAIT a second....according to what I've read about boyes he was good and he has had an off year this year.....so why are the sabres trading high draft picks for guys who are having bad years....I freely admit i barely know anything about boyes so maybe he will be good, but it seems like darcy didn't get the best person he could get unless he's not done.....if this is the only move they make i will be frusterated......
a 2nd pick is a coin flip on a contributing player 5 years from now. Boyes is definitely worth it if he can generate any kind of production

I think that's true for most people who score 30-40 goals
Salary aside, this is exactly the type of player I was hoping they'd target. Someone who's had big seasons (30g+, 40g+) and has been slumping a bit. Exactly the change of scenery type of player that could work out really well for the Sabres.

A second round pick is coin of the realm in the summer when teams start remodeling their rosters. For a team looking to acquire NHL-level assets, it's important to not squander the futures other teams will be looking for come June.

Yep, 2nd round picks are a lot more valuable than people here at HFboards make them out to be.
For a rental, I wouldn't have liked this at all. But considering we got another year out of Boyes to see what he has I have no problem with this.
And hell, maybe we find our way into a 2nd somehow today.
The more I've let this trade stew around, the more I like it.
Boyes seems like a classic case of a player who just needs a change of scenery.
Exactly, it is a bit like the Briere trade. Someone who has shown flash, but fallen out of favor with his current team. I realize it is different in the sense of age/experience and contract price. However, we bought low, when his value was down ... and we hope that the return is a good one. Cant be any worse than the flaming rentals we have had lately.
