That is the way I see it. He is not the type of guy most people likely expected but Regier definately 'wins' the trade on first impression.

As I said, does this mean that one of Pominville or Stafford are expendable?

This is not the deal we needed. Another winger who plays smaller than his size with a salary at very very good second line money. The Blues gave him away for a second round draft choice for a reason and his being what these boards project for him is not the reason. I thought he was a floater with the Leafsand Boston and while skilled he did surprise me with good stats a couple of years after leaving there. We did NOT add toughness, leadership, consistent effort, a true centre or a defenceman who is a power play leader or a beast in his own end. That second pick may have been what we needed to trade up in the first round to get a shot at what we really need and for that reason unless more is coming, I am disappointed. This makes it look like we are doing something and that is all.

Not a lot of those available on Deadline Day. If any.

Penner's return makes this look even better, IMO

So it appears they're going to try to run-and-gun to the playoffs if they're rolling out three offensively geared lines. *shrug*

According to Sabres.com,

Brad Boyes will wear #22 for the Buffalo Sabres

I chuckled at the thought of Mike Grier and Rob Nieds "runnin' and gunnin'."

So, what are the lines going to be?

Stafford-Connolly-Boyes
Vanek-Hecht-Pominville
Ennis-Gaustad-Kaleta
Gerbe-McCormick-Grier
x Nieds

Vanek-Ennis-Pominville
Stafford-Connolly-Boyes
Gerbe-Hecht-Kaleta
McCormick-Gaustad-Grier

for ***** n giggles

They have his interview with NHL Live on Sabres.com. Was a good listen.

Is excited about Ruff and the system the Sabres play. He gets to be more creative as the Blues played a stingy system.

Also said he knows Monty and Connolly from juniors. And Montador gave him a call after the trade.

Thats cool Monty called him up. A simple welcoming call can make him feel more comfortable which is great to hear. Hope he joins the team here in NYC and I get to see him at MSG tomorrow

Sounds like he's expecting an offensive system.

Oops.

Are we not an offensive system?
Buffalo is 4th in shots per game.
Buffalo is 12th in goals per game. (Considering where we were ranked in late November, I'd say that's pretty good)
Buffalo is 7th in 5 on 5 scoring ratio.
Buffalo is 19th in shot against per game.

The Blues are 18th in shots per game
The Blues are 15th in scoring.
St Louis is 20th in 5 v 5 scoring.
The Blues are 5th in shots against per game

Buffalo is A LOT more aggressive now than before...adding Boyes, a goal scorer, is only going to help.

I'd say Boyes is right in his assessment, wouldn't you agree?

Hard to say until everyone sees how Boyes turns out. If he fits in and gets his scoring touch back, I could see maybe Pominville becoming available - especially if his production continues to wane. He'll be 29 this fall and his contract is more than Boyes' is.

AHHHH the fact that this is the ONLY move darcy made makes me mad.............I feel about the same as when we got torres, moore, nieds....I have a feeling that this trade isn't going to work out any better then those trades did...

When Pegula said he was cutting the chains I thought a move would be made that people didn't have to talk themselves into. It seems like everyone is trying to point out the good and say why this is good instead of it being an obviously good trade. Thats what I wanted....a trade that sabres fans would hear the name and immediately be excited about, not a guy who had a good year 3 years ago and mediocre since....seems like he belongs on the sabres by the way that blues fans are talking about him.....doesn't like fighting for the puck, not a good forchecker but has a really fast shot for the 1 time out of 10 that it's actually on net..... WOW IM PUMPED...please prove me wrong but if he proves me right it's good too cause darcy might get the boot....

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP)—Terry Pegula’s influence and deep pockets as the Buffalo Sabres new owner quickly paid off for the team at the NHL’s trading deadline.

With Pegula’s blessing, the Sabres added forward Brad Boyes —and what’s left of the player’s hefty salary—to a lineup in need of offensive punch in a bid to make one final push for the playoffs.

“This is a new era of ownership,” general manager Darcy Regier said Monday, a day after acquiring Boyes in a trade with the St. Louis Blues. “The parameters are different. I think what Terry has done is open up an area that we haven’t had the ability to go to before. And that’s positive.”

Regier was referring to how, in the past, he lacked the flexibility to add a high-priced player such as Boyes. In exchange for a second-round draft pick, the Sabres landed a two-time 30-goal-scorer, while also picking up what’s left of Boyes’ $4.5 million salary this season, plus the $4 million he’s to make next year.

His addition ups the Sabres payroll to about $56 million, about $3.5 million under the NHL salary cap.

The trade was completed late Sunday night, and less than a week after Pegula, a Pennsylvania billionaire and longtime Sabres fan, closed on his $189 million purchase of the franchise. Regier said Pegula was on hand during trade talks for much of the weekend in leading up to Monday’s deadline.
Quote:
“For us to be able to add someone who is going to contribute offensively … it’s important,” Regier said. “It’s an important message to send to the players.”

Boyes traveled to Buffalo from Calgary, where he played in the Blues’ 1-0 loss on Sunday night. After completing his physical, Boyes was scheduled to join the Sabres in New York.

The 28-year-old has 12 goals and 29 assists in 62 games this season. His 41 points immediately put him second on the Sabres list this season, behind Thomas Vanek’s(notes) 52.

Vanek credited Pegula for making the move.

“What else can you ask for in an owner who wants to really win?” Vanek said. “For us, it’s great. Now we’ve just got to rise up to it.”

Boyes addition should help.

Pretty sure Pegula went home to Florida w/his family after the Saturday night game so he couldn't have actually been there for the deadline.

Regier said Pegula was in the room all day asking questions (TBN audio clip). Probably heading home tonight/tomorrow
