Top six RW locked up for 4 years with a cap hit less than $4M. Great deal providing super flexibility with the cap.
Congratulations to JW and the Kings. We are starting to see what the change in culture means to real winners. First Johnson and now Williams. Will Handzus extend next at a very low $2M for one season to be a role player next season?
Seriously though, love this signing. I expected 4M+, so I'm really happy with this. Risky because of health issues, obviously, but it's definitely worth it for what he delivers when he can stay healthy. Right wing is locked up nicely with Brown, Williams, and Simmonds (as soon as he signs), IMO.
This might sound weird, but signing a "injury prone" player like JW isn't the worst for the Kings. We all know the Kings have a bunch of prospects "waiting in the wings" (pun intended) and getting them a handful of important mins here and there isn't terrible for the organization. As long as its not 20+ games a year.
The only concern, aside from injury history, is that he came in to camp in the best shape of his career which, of course, just happened to be a contract year. Hopefully he keeps the off-season training at the same level because it really shows out there on the ice.
As for the number, isn't it actually a raise for Williams? The guy got $3.5MM after being healthy and now gets a raise after having one (knock on wood) healthy seaason. I like the signing as well but I think the "what a steal" rhetoric can be toned down a bit. 4 years is a long deal for Williams given his history so I'm sure that had to do with the minimal increase in salary.
Anyways, glad the signing was made and it's fair for both sides. Aside from DD and Simmonds extensions, I'd like to see A-Mart next with a Drewiske type deal, if he isn't traded today of course.
