Absolutely spectacular deal! Wow! It is like they converted the amount he made this season to length. Very happy to have Williams stick around, great deal.

Dean is the man with contracts! He has done a great job bringing in players that are willing to sign for less to stay in LA.

Per Kevin Allen - USA today:

Justin Williams' new yearly salaries in LA: $3.9 million, $3.9 million, $3.75 million, $3.05 million.

The other thread someone is claiming that it doesn't include a NTC. Nice flexibility for the Kings on top of the good cap hit.

Thank you Justin Williams for taking a discount for the team!

Let's hope Williams isn't one of those contract year players and that he puts the same amount of work in this summer that he did the previous one.

... Little surprised at the length of the deal since Williams has about 43 goals over the last four seasons; works out to about 10 or 11 a year. He was playing for a contract this season, as well, so it remains to be seen what will happen when he isn't. Beyond that, there's the injury history of the man. It's not a terrible deal, just puzzling. Williams is an OK player when he's healthy, still surprisingly careless with the puck considering his veteran status, and this season is just the third one out of his ten where he's hit 20 goals. Perhaps he can find the fountain of youth; I doubt it but stranger things have happened, I suppose.

This great signing got me thinking about what kind of position the Kings are in for next years cap situation. The Kings have fifteen players under NHL contracts. As of right now the Kings have the following spots vacant (I have listed the expected player immediately after the hole listed ... ordered by importance):

1 D - Doughty
2/3 C - Loktionov/Schenn (I want to stress this is an either or scenario. I fully expect Stoll to be here next year and filling one of them)
1 LW - ???????
3 RW - Simmonds
3/4 LW - ? (Again this is an either or scenario. Depends on where the Kings play Clifford)
4 C - Lewis
2 Forward Healthy Scratches - Cliche, Clune, King, Holloway et al

The Kings have 15.75MM available in cap space for next season assuming the cap stays where it is. The fourth line center and the healthy scratches should come in at a total value of roughly 3MM and let's assume Schenn fills the 2/3 C hole with his cap hit of 3.14MM. That leaves 9.61MM available for four positions. Simmonds should expect to receive anywhere between 1.5MM and 2MM. I'm going to hedge on the high side for budgeting purposes and say Simmonds makes 2MM. That leaves 7.61 for Doughty and the two left wing positions.

I want to devote an entire paragraph to Doughty because I feel like what I'm about to say is going to cause some consternation. I think he should be making at least one million less than Jack Johnson's 4.36MM. I think he's better than Jack right now and I think he will be better than Jack in the future. In the future Doughty's contract will reflect that; however, the major difference here is that Jack and Drew are at very different points in their NHL careers. Jack gave up three years of UFA to get that contract. Doughty's contract is not likely to take him that far. Doughty isn't even eligible for arbitration for another year. If Doughty is willing to take a long term contract then we might see a comparable contract but that type of contract would have to go for at least five years to even take up even one year of free agency. It really depends on how many years Doughty is willing to sign for. Short term deal just won't net him that much.

This is where it gets really tough. The Kings only have 7.61MM to sign Doughty, the top line forward, and the 3/4 LW. If Doughty makes 3MM that leaves only 4.61 for two positions. Even if you sign somebody for the minimum to fill the 4LW that leaves just a hair of 4MM to sign a premier left winger. Very difficult task.

I, for one, am looking forward to see how all of this is resolved.

I'd be shocked if they all don't walk (barring a trade today where a bunch of kids get dealt for rentals). Harrold would be like #14 on our depth chart next year, Poni obviously doesn't fit and at that cap hit no way he's back. Zues I'd love to keep, but where do you put him? He's to good, and expensive for the fourth line, but with Kopitar, Stoll and either Schenn or Loktionov, no way he cracks the top three lines.

Besides, we need to give some of these kids a shot, Mollar deserves a chance after this season, Loktionov should made a big run at 2nd or 3rd line C and Schenn will as well. Not to mention a few guys like Cliche/Clune for depth roles and the bazillion D prospects we have.

I want to say thanks to DL and JW for getting this done. It helps secure our short term future and gives us some strong cap flexbility long term. JW must really think we are going to be a cup contender soon, as he took a decent discount to stick around.

I tend to agree. I don't see this as too much of a discount, especially give the length of the contract. I think it is very fair value. I highly doubt he would have seen anything like $4.5-5M on the open market.

That said, I like the signing

I've got a lot of respect for him after this. Could've gotten 5/25 on the market.

Great deal for both sides. This gives us flexibility in the next 4 years.

I LOVE IT!

We also save $ on Poni for next year. Zues I think is gone. Stoll stays.

I'm pleased with the signing. A more than reasonable price for the production and effort. Now, resign Doughty to a JJ-like cap friendly deal and we're set for years.

Very happy with this signing, great to see that Justin will be here for 4 more years Really happy to see him take a discount to stay with the Kings in a year he is doing well and staying healthy where he may(would) have gotten more waiting til the summer and going the UFA route.

Makes me wonder with the timing if Williams might I've been traded had the two sides not been able to come to an agreement today. Just speculation, of course.
