Seems like the perfect partner for Hannan to me to really eat minutes. And, as I was saying, we needed a puck moving veteran on the bottom pairing more than another stay at home type given who we had signed already. Without moving out a couple of our existing contracts, Hannan wasn't staying.

Trade value was excellent.

Now just need the center/forward.

If you guys have a defender or defensive system capable of covering up Wideman's mistakes in his own end, you'll love him for the honeymoon phase. He is a better passer than he's given credit for, and has a great wrist shot as well. Unfortunately he always winds up for slappers, which always hit glass.

Bah.

That right there is the death blow for Hannan coming back....unless they can move Poti and Schultz.
Exactly. SIGNED THROUGH 2012 people.

I was beginning to be hopeful about Hannan staying put.

Well, if BB insists on playing Green with Schultz, Hannan-Wideman is a nice complementary pairing.

Random thoughts

-Hopefully we can see Hannan now back at LD
-Didn't really expect Sarge to be traded 1-1 for a Dman. Want to horde D. Maybe offseason.
-Keeping Hannan definitely requires a move now... either Wideman flip or Sarge.
-Just pisses me off that he makes same as Michalek in Pitt

Speaking of Z. My friends had a blast staying with him. Got to go back with the family and friends suite and met all the pens they wanted included Sid. Dream come true for them. My friends are good people... just a little flawed.

SkyKerstein: #Caps Sturm on playing with Wideman in Boston "He was our best defenseman in the playoffs"

He had 1+11 in 13 games last year.

The one year remaining makes this curious. Gotta wonder if there's another shoe to drop.

Have to think it'll be Hannan.

This move definitely puts a nail in Hannan coming back and I also think it means there is a decent chance Green is done of the year.

Step above our guys... who always hit shins.

And also, our forwards don't use the points as they should. So the glass maybe safe.

Actually his 'downfall' is his tendency to fall down trying to skate backwards or getting on D giving the opposition open ice to skate in on the goalie.

NHL Network talking about how great BMo looks this year

I dont like the extra year on wideman. Maybe we parlay his ass into something else.

I love that clip, first thing I thought about when I saw the trade come through...

I'm not sold on Wideman at all.

Please get rid of Sloan, at this point other teams still may not know how horrible he actually is.

I didn't like him in Hershey, and will never understand how he broke onto the Caps lineup.

i wouldn't be sad to see Schultz go, either. He's 6'6" and plays like he's 4'6".

I don't think it necessarily means Hannan is gone. The Caps didn't give up very much to get Wideman, so I could see the Caps trading him at the draft for whatever if they want to re-sign Hannan.

Wideman is exactly the player that I had hoped we were getting away from. He's Brian Pothier at twice the salary. He also brings no appreciable experience and has been traded twice for underperforming.

Wideman's a really solid pick-up IMO. He tends to get criticized too much on his defensive-play which isn't bad and can always be improved on.

McPhee obviously believes you need a puck mover on every pairing. That's all this is. 3 pairing puck mover.

A Wideman-Schultz/Sloan pairing has high comedic potential.

This ^^^ Most of the STH near me in Boston like Wides.

He had a tough reg season for Boston last year but I believe he was injured. After the Olympic break he was much better. He was excellent in the playoffs.

A couple of years ago he was almost as good (and IMO better some games) than Chara.

Some ignorant fans (?) started to boo him and will everytime he is in Boston. I won't be one of them.

He does hit BTW and will log many min. per game..

I hope he does well for you. Seems like a nice kid.

My reference to Green was more of his playoff fail and lack of defensive play, although this year he defense was much better.
