For the third time I Salute our Moneypuck Overlord!

Mike Gillis the best general manager in professional hockey.

Once again Gillis made some strong additions on deadline day bringing in Chris Higgins and Maxim Lapierre who both fit needs here that we all articulated while giving up two nothing prospects and a 3rd. The Higgins and Lapierre trades illustrate yet again Gillis' ability to turn nothing prospects into NHL players.

Also this team has gone through it's yearly battery of injuries yet for the first time in my memory and maybe ever we have a stocked cupboard to cover it. We are literally stacked with depth at every position and we have blue chip prospects.

Gillis said his objective when he first signed on as GM here was to make this team top five in every category. I originally scoffed at it thinking it was impossible and fluff coming from a hungry new GM wanting to get his name out there. However Gillis has done just that with this team. The Vancouver Canucks are the best team in the world right now with the reigning Art Ross and Hart trophy winner and the current top two scorers in the league. I never thought I would see any of these things in my Canuck fandom.

I am a huge Gillis fan and I honestly cannot believe how he's turned this team around. So once again I'd like to salute our moneypuck overlord.

I concur. I honestly wasn't expecting anything to happen to the Canucks today, but seeing how we somehow acquired two players while giving up virtually nothing, is awesome. Too bad Higgins is injured, but we got our centre!

I was pretty skeptical when they hired a former agent with no experience as their GM.

I was wrong.

Heading into the playoffs this is what our lineup could look like (assuming everyone is healthy):

Sedin-Sedin-Burrows
Raymond-Kesler-Samuelsson
Torres-Malhotra-Higgins
Glass-Lapierre-Hansen
Tambo-Oreskovich

Edler-Ehrhoff
Hamhuis-Bieksa
Ballard-Salo
Alberts-Rome

Luongo
Schneider

If there is a GM of the year award. Gillis deserves it.

Wow, just the other day a Habs fan laughed at me when I did chose Lappi as my favourite player on their team (yeah). It says something about me of course, but also about the Habs - and of course about Lappiere. Him and Glass on the same line is sandpaper enough.

But mostly I am glad that we actually pulled some trade of which can be used in the Play off, I didn't expect it at all.

I for one was not happy when Gillis was signed. Completely wrong on my behalf. Then again it was mostly because I can't stand Aquilini and I hate to see him raking in money from Canuck fan base.

this is ridiculous. he got infinitely better players than nonis, gave up 3rds instead of 2nds, and they were far less necessary to the team he has built up to the deadline.

i am so in love with this roster. flexibility like i've never seen on a canucks team before. enough depth players and AHL talent to field an almost realistic florida panthers team:

sedin sedin burrows
raymond kesler samuelsson
torres malhotra hansen
higgins lapierre glass

edler ehrhoff
hamuis bieksa
ballard edler

luongo
schneider

---

tambellini hodgson oreskovich
volpatti schroeder shirokov
sweatt bolduc desbiens
bliznak at center, on the wing: rypien, peters, or one of sweatt or connaughton (out of position)

alberts rome
sauve tanev
parent sweatt/connaughton

lack
weiman?

anyone still pissed morrison isn't here?

Weird how little happened in the West.

Anahiem got grittier, LA got Penner... but really needed a 2nd line center...
Calgary get's a basically washed up Modin

Chicago gets Campoli

Yotes get Klesla for Upshall... CBJ gets Upshall.

But Sharks, Wings, Wild, Stars, Preds... nada.

Assuming those moves, the #nhl #canucks come in something like $950 under their daily upper limit.

That's not $950,000... That's $950.00 - as in just under a grand.

By the way that roster that I posted earlier in this thread is JUST BARELY under the cap. It pretty much means that unless Vancouver has any injuries over the next 9 games they will have a 22 man roster with pretty much no cap space to call anyone up in case of injuries.

That's a real risky little game they are playing here and if we do get any short term injuries it might be a real big problem over the last 6 weeks of the season.

Currently we've got 20 healthy bodies and 2 guys on IR (not including Edler and Alberts and assuming Sweatt has been sent down).

Once Bieksa is healthy we'll have some flexibility and will likely send Tanev down to the minors and be able to call up two players that have a cap hit that is as much as $1.075m (so basically a couple of guys making $0.5m).

It's a real tight rope here that management has decided to walk.

Can't wait to see how much the other team's fans whine and moan about it being cap circumvention.

Gillis is crafty like a fox. Props to Gilman I'm sure too.

We could be fielding a playoff team for Six Top 4 Defencemen, and a the least experienced player on the team having 174 NHL games.

But if we hit the playoffs relatively unscathed and get to go over the cap it'll be just so badass.

Smooth-talking Gillis gets what he wants. I wonder how he made out at the bars during his youth.

As has been the norm since he's taken over, I like the moves he made together. In my opinion, he's done his job to a tee.

And beyond his transaction history, I love the way he's approached the job, the way he's changed the team's culture, and his level-headed outlook. Really just a great guy to have in charge.

This group might not win but its hard to argue that Gillis hasn't addressed needs without sacrificing the future.

You're not left crossing your fingers and hoping he doesn't do something stupid.
