Alexandre "How's your potato farm" Burrows has a nicely sized encyclopedia on many players. He should at least be able to pass on the knowledge to Lappy.
I'm just doing a little background on this guy's downfall in Montreal, and it seems (outside of his playoff run last year) he started to fall-off when Martin moved him to wing, and took away all of his PK time after Carbonneau was fired in 2009. It seems Carbonneau used him more as a shut-down player, and when coached properly the guy was a 15 goal scorer.
And Lapierre did request a trade out of Montreal; no real concrete reports on why, but common perception is he wasn't happy with how Martin was using him (notably taking away his PK responsibilities).
Why would we throw our 35 goal scorer to the 4th line where he would get 6min of ice time a night?
I think it was meant more as like a thought experiment.
What if the Canucks put Lapierre, Kelser, and Burrows on a line against, say, Edmonton, and told them "**** all that composure stuff, boys. Let's see who can get the most guys chasing them around the ice tonight. Extra points will be awarded for style and comedic merit."
Strolling through the various tubes of the inter-web, a couple of things stood out for me. One, a few Oiler fans were advising that the LA Kings SHOULD NOT try and light a fire under Dustin Penner. He is who he is and he will either buy into the coach's system or he will not.
On the other hand, the skinny on Max Lapierre is that Gillis and AV will should be able to rein in Max because he'll either buy in, or he won't play.
Don't know about you guys, but I'll take the guy you have to rein in over the guy you have to think about lighting a fire under.
Yeah, Penner's a solid player that I'd love on Kesler's line. He also really brings it in the playoffs.
Doesn't change that still I like our team better than LA's for the playoffs, and the fact that LA gave up a ton to get Penner, but Penner's underrated by a lot of people.
That's just part of the calculation for the Canucks. If they save $100k over the course of the season, that's a benefit they get from the trade. The Ducks are essentially buying (improved) assets in this case.
That makes sense since the Ducks are flush with cash and the Canucks are skint, well it would if it wasn't the other way around. I have to think Perrault is their emergency call up.

The package LA gave up for Penner isn't too bad. Teubert isn't going to be more than a 2nd pairing defensive defenseman. The 1st rd pick will be a 15-25 pick, and then there is a 2nd/3rd rd pick.
I think Lombardi did a very good job, to get Penner and not over paying.
VANCOUVER -- Defenceman Keith Ballard didn't need much of an introduction to new teammate Maxim Lapierre, who the Vancouver Canucks acquired at the NHL trade deadline.
The two became acquainted in a fight when Ballard was with the Florida Panthers and Lapierre was a member of the Montreal Canadiens.
"It wasn't much of a fight," Ballard said with a smile after the Canucks practised Tuesday before their game with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
[...]
Lapierre broke into a grin when reminded of his past skirmish with Ballard.
"When two guys fight it's because they did something right on the ice," he said. "We haven't talked about it yet but he seems like a great guy."
This was my favourite part though:
Quote:
Centre Ryan Kesler said the two players strengthen Vancouver's lineup.
"It makes our potent offence that much more dangerous," he said. "We don't have any weaknesses. We like that feeling.
"We're going into games knowing we are going to win. It's just how."
I doubt Penner will do any better in LA than he did in Edmonton.
I think statistically he'll do better in LA...just a far better, more experienced supporting cast of offensive talent. But he is what he is at this stage and I don't think we'll see him break into superstar "big intimidating power forward" territory. He's a big man with good hands.
Is he the next great power forward? Nope. Is he a big body that can score a decent amount, and has had solid playoff performances that helped his team en route to a Stanley Cup? He fits the bill on that one.
He's a solid extra threat for the Kings. That's been something missing for them for a long time, much like a 4th line's been missing for us. They addressed their needs and we addressed ours. If the Canucks had gotten him for a similar package, we'd be singing and dancing about how perfect of a fit he was for Kesler.

That's what the Flyers did last year in the playoffs
They had enough talent to balance all 4 lines with offense like Vig can now, and they steamrolled through the playoffs
So the time on ice for each line were pretty much similar

Lombardi is going to have to deal with Penner's $4.25M cap hit before the start of next season.
