It is an E5 by Eklund which to him is the same as confirmed.

He's also saying the extension is at $4M/per. http://twitter.com/#!/EKLUND

This really isn't out of the realm of possibility, assuming the brass are now firmly entrenched that Niemi is our #1 for now and long-term.

Big boy's gonna hang around for awhile.

I like Niemi, I hope it's not really for 4mil per.

I don't understand the motivation behind this if it's true. I don't want to sound cruel, but make him continue to earn his contract for next year with his postseason play. I'd rather the Sharks win the Cup and not be able to re-sign him than the other way around.

After just over half a season? Geez, 2 seasons I can be ok with, but 4@4? I don't like it.

I like it. Everybody was curious as to whether he could play well behind a vastly inferior defense. Well, I think he has answered that question.

Official one line announcement:
http://sharks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=554689

Please change thread title to "Confirmed with link"

I guess you don't dump your Aunty, do you?

I'm okay with this is he can be this good throughout an entire season and playoffs. He's already slowly building up a rep for being a second half goalie. As long as Aunty is a Sharks, I NEVER want to see another stretch of play out of him like his play from October - December 2010. As long as that doesn't happen, this isn't too bad I suppose.

If he works on them rebounds, I like the deal.

Where are people getting 4 years @ 4mil? I was hoping 3 @ 3.5 but that was probably wishful thinking. Again, I don't see why DW was averse to waiting for the playoffs to end before signing him. Anyway, hopefully Nitty will be gone in the offseason.

Nice. Much rather have Niemi at 4 than Nabokov at whatever.

I'm good with an extension. Niemi has earned it. But I was hoping for 3 years at around $10-$11M.

4 years at $16M is too much IMO.

I think that's an unfair assumption (that his motivation and hence, play will now drop).

Hope we deal or waive Nitty next year. Also, guess the org is more worried about Stalock's injury than originally thought?

On the whole, stoked about this re-signing. I like Niemi. Maybe $250K higher than I would have liked but I did think only 3 years. Good to have him on board long-term. Well deserved, Nemo.

Eklund, but considering he was right about Niemi being extended before the Sharks announced it, I bet it's right there (an average/cap hit of $4M/per)

I thought it was obvious. Niemi came here on a one year deal to win a Cup and proved he deserved the big bucks. I suppose the Sharks think he's the guy to lead us on a deep run this year. So if that happens and say even he wins another Cup, he'd price himself out of the Sharks.

So I guess the Sharks didn't want to take that chance so they offered him a chance to get semi-big bucks now and a 4 year deal. For Niemi at this point, he has no idea what his value would be on July 1, 2011. So for Niemi it was a no brainer.

Cap hit, yes. Salary each season could be a bit higher or lower.

I really didnt like the Niemi signing at first, but he has definitely won me over with his play.

3.8 per seems a tad high for me, but if he can keep this level of play during the playoffs it'll be worth it.
