Like most people here I was hoping for something more like 3 years @ 3.5 but I am happy with this. I think Niemi has given Couture a run for his money for team MVP this season. In fact, my vote would go for Niemi.

I think the Sharks might be thinking ahead a couple of years as Sateri should be (hopefully) playing w/ the WorSharks next year and when he's ready to play in San Jose, Niemi might be the perfect mentor for him.
I stand corrected, thanks to you and LS.

Also, If they were really planning on bringing Sateri over the pond next year, I feel like we would have heard whispers by now

He can win a cup. There is no doubt about that. For the next four years we do not have worry whether or not our goaltending can carry us in the playoffs. It's a little high, but as long as their is not a NMC/NTC it's a good deal.

Wallin, huskins, and mitchell will all be off the books I believe, and the cap is going up by two million so it shouldn't be an issue unless seto gets greedy and wants big bucks.

Since the beginning of December, Niemi is 20-10 with 5 shutouts, a 2.07 GAA and a 0.930 Save %. I would be surprized if there were many goalies better than him during that time frame.

Mitchell is signed through next year, although he seems like he's a good candidate to be moved.

I think he only signed a two year deal, this being the second year.

also, remember the value of inflation over time, cap increases, etc. long term deals should be looked at in the.... long term

Arbitration award was $2.75m/1 year IIRC. And the Hawks walked away.

Nope, three year deal. 1.367 cap hit, 1.7x in real money next year.

Mitchell is under contract for next year.

For 11-12, the FA setup looks like this for SJ:

UFA
Ben Eager
Scott Nichol
Kyle Wellwood
Jamal Mayers
Ian White
Niclas Wallin
Kent Huskins

Thomas Greiss*
T.J. Trevelyan
Sean Sullivan

RFA
Devin Setoguchi
John McCarthy

Carter Hutton
Jamie McGinn
Benn Ferriero
Alex Stalock
Kevin Henderson
Frazer McLaren
Michael Swift
Joe Loprieno
Patrick Davis
Andrew Desjardins

*Greiss will most likely be UFA VI because he won't meet the GP requirements to retain RFA status

Italics are players not currently on the SJ roster (and Hutton)

I'm guessing Mitchell and Nitty will both be gone in the offseason and of course Wallin and Huskins will not be retained (which is ~$4.3mil right there).

My dream lineup for next season:

FORWARDS
Patrick Marleau ($6.900m) / Joe Thornton ($7.000m) / Devin Setoguchi ($2.650m)
Ryane Clowe ($3.625m) / Logan Couture ($1.241m) / Kyle Wellwood ($1.200m)
Marco Sturm ($1.400m) / Joe Pavelski ($4.000m) / Dany Heatley ($7.500m)
John McCarthy ($0.650m) / Scott Nichol ($0.760m) / Benn Ferriero ($0.650m)

DEFENSEMEN
Braydon Coburn ($3.200m) / Dan Boyle ($6.666m)
Douglas Murray ($2.500m) / Jason Demers ($1.250m)
Marc-Edouard Vlasic ($3.100m) / Justin Braun ($0.875m)
Mike Moore ($0.512m)

GOALTENDERS
Antti Niemi ($3.800m) / Alex Stalock ($0.650m)

SALARY CAP: $62,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $60,130,834; BONUSES: $587,500
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $1,869,166

Obviously you can sub out Sturm for different veteran free agent scoring depth and Coburn for White or Tyutin or a different defenseman.

The main reason Sateri wasn't brough over last year is because Stalock was the clear #1 for the Wor Sharks. Better to let Sateri play than to back up a work horse like Stalock. W/ Stalock's injury it opens up an opportunity for Sateri to come to over and play. I get the impression from the Sharks org that they are very, very high on this kis.

So what does this mean for Niittymaki for next season?

Paying a backup $2 mill seems like a lot. So would the Sharks try to trade him and say bring up Stalock to backup Niemi?

Thanks.

Definitely the end for Nitty in SJ. No idea who he gets dealt to though.

I'll be the 1st to admit that at first I didn't like getting Nemo this year--In fact I was one of the 1st to use the cheeseball and obvious phrase "I'm Anti-Niemi". I have to admit, he's won me over, even though his style doesn't exactly instill a sense of calm (at least for me) his results sure have.

3.8M seems a bit high, but not absurdly high. I'm surprised nobody else has speculated this yet, but it seems dougie may have promised Nemo a smidge higher next contract if he proved himself in order to get him to sign for this year at 2M.

Wow! What a wakeup call. I'm STOKED. Possibly a little high, but 4 years balances that out.

Was always for the original signing and his play and this signing is just icing on the cake.

DW is a genius

Feels like only yesterday we would adjust our SNOGs to more goals for the other team if Niemi was starting instead of Niittymaki. Sun rise, sun set...

I wonder why DW didnt trade Nitty before the deadline?
