Odd League (ECHL) Punishment: Fair or Foul?

The ECHL laid down a punishment today that I thought was very odd. Just wondering what people's thoughts are on the punishment or if anyone had heard of anything like this before?

Dallas has assigned goalie Tyler Beskorowany to the Idaho Steelheads for the season. He was called up early in the season for a two month AHL assignment but only played 8 games. During that time Idaho signed Jase Weslosky after he was kicked out of St.Cloud State for academic reasons. Dallas sent Besko back to Idaho to get him back on the ice more and continue his development. To fill Besko's spot Dallas pulled Adrien Lemay from their CHL affiliate Allen Americans and sent him to Texas to back up Richard Bachman.

Last week Besko went back to Texas and instead of Lemay going back to Allen, Dallas sent him to Idaho. He played in and won two games but today the ECHL deemed Lemay as an "illegal player" because of having a previous CHL contract and gave Idaho the choice of being docked 4 points or getting rid of Weslosky. So Weslosky was "dealt" to Florida today and the league listed the transaction as traded for "cash considerations".

Ironically, 3 weeks ago Weslosky was loaned to the Toronto Marlies but after flying to Toronto and being informed he would start that night he went to the hotel to take a nap and was awaken by a Marlies coach and informed that he was inelligible to play because he was still on the Islanders protected list. So he flew to Toronto, took an hour nap and flew back in the same day.

My thought is that the ECHL let the transaction happen and because they didn't do their homework that Idaho has been unfairly penalized. The AHL did their homework and all was well, no harm no foul.

Does this penalty seem odd, deserved, harsh, unfair?

Seems like someone in the ECHL office wasn't doing their homework as Lemay should have been deemed 'illegal' before being entered into the gamesheet for his first game.

This is an interesting case of 'AA' hockey transfers.
