All Things 2011 Draft

Hey guys, i want us to make the playoffs more than anyone but right now since the start of the new year we just have been playing like ****. I hope we make it but if we dont, can you see us dropping to pick in the top 7 picks in this years draft?

If you look at the league standings, right now we are picking at the 13th spot. There are 7 teams within 10pts or less of us, plus with the devils on a tear of late, they could possibly pass us too if we continue to play like this and lose games.

Would you be happy picking in the 6-8 slot, making the playoffs and seeing what we can do, or just missing the playoffs again and picking around 10-14? What does everyone think will happen?

Making the playoffs will be the first choice for anyone with a brain. Failing that I'd like to see them get as close as they can, playing in as many important games as they can.

Remember last year when people wanted them to tank so they could get a Brandon Gormley or Cam Fowler type?

Being brutally honest, if we miss the playoffs, I'd prefer to see them trade out of the first round and into NEXT years 1st round.

After the top 4, the talent dropoff is undeniable. Huberdeau and Strome are nice but not great. Next year is looking like a beastly draft. If we can accelerate the Sens rebuild and go up into next years draft twice, I'd be much happier than with picking one of the million question marks in the first round of the 2011 draft.

yea thank god we didnt, i didnt want either of those guys. Im extremly happy with McIlrath and his potential of a shea Weber/Jeff beukaboom type. I dont want this to become a thread about the past years draft. I want them to make the playoffs because i think we can be a darkhorse and surprise people.

Im in NO way advocating for a tank at all. Im just saying that if we continue to play this way no matter what we will continue to lose games and fall in the standings. With so many teams VERY close behind us we could easily fall into having a pick in the 6-9 spot.

Could end up trading our pick say 8th, with a 2nd and grachev for a top 4 pick

I think the Sens scouting staff knows this as well as you do, so we might have to give up a pretty penny to acquire their pick.

I wouldnt mind doing that at all either. Trading our first this year and another pick/prospect for someones 1st next year that we know will finish at the bottom would be great for us, kinda like the bruins did with seguin.

I think the opportunity to pick up 2 picks NOW and accelerate the rebuild might be just as enticing.

A little revisionist history? No one was hoping for either of those players, that I recall.

At one point we were 6th worst in the league. There were only three options:

1) Play much, much better than we had the entire season to that point and make the playoffs
2) Play much, much better than we had the entire season to that point, miss the playoffs and make our draft pick worse
3) Continue to play poorly and get a top draft pick

Most of us believed that #1 was unlikely. As it turns out, we were right. We went 7-1-2 in our final 10 games and still missed by 1 point. We also believed that #2 was the worst possible scenario. We were right about that as well.

Had #3 occurred, maybe Jeff Skinner is a Ranger right now. That would have sucked, huh?

Currently, we are in playoff position and we are a better team than we were last year, so I would not advocate that we would be better off losing. But if we continue to lose and fall out of the race, you can bet I'll be looking for us to get a high pick. Missing the playoffs sucks. If you are gonna do it though, do it right.

Mediocre talent, fight for your playoff lives, pick 10-18th in the draft, acquire more mediocre talent. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

This is the cycle the Rangers have been on for the majority of their existence, and one that will continue unless something changes in the future.

You know the season is going down the tubes when you start talking about the draft.

Seriously though, how much have you seen either of those players play?

And maybe if they lost more they would have ended up with the 6th pick and taken Dylan McIlrath. I don't know what would have happened and you don't either. shifting a few spots up and down the 6-12 range doesn't necessarily mean getting a better or worse player.

I think playing in a do or die situation the last 10 or so games of last season was great experience for the younger players on the team, and will help them in that situation this year, and I have no regrets about it.

Target: Enstrom at the draft

Anisimov, Del Zotto, [one of Bourque, Hagelin, Grachev, Thomas, Werek, Kundratek], 1st 2011, 2nd 2011(WSH) for Enstrom

Dubinsky Richards Gaborik
Wolski Stepan Zuccarello
Kreider Boyle Callahan
Avery Fedotenko Prust

Staal Enstrom
McDonagh Girardi
Eminger Sauer
Valentenko or cheap vet

Lundqvist
Biron

Probably not a sexy enough / proven enough offer for Atlanta, still.

Soooooo, what happens if the Rangers pull that deal off before the draft (which they have to with what you included in the package) and Richards re-signs with Dallas (or another team) after that?

Ranger's top 2 centers would be Stepan and Boyle. Not good. The only way Anisimov is dealt is if it's in a package for a #1 center.

And I don't think Fed's is a center.

That's way too much, and I'm a huge Enstrom fan. What makes you think the Hawks even want to trade him?

Being that the Hawks have zero say as to whether or not they trade him, I'm sure they'd chomp at the bit to move him for free assets.
