Not very adept (okay, so i haven't bothered to figure it out yet) at inserting video clips here, but if someone goes to www.cbc.ca and open the HNIC page, AND they posted the video for Coaches Corner tonight, this thread would get even more interesting...just sayin'

At MOST 5min, and a game... Nothing more needed for that little hit. Clutterbutts hit was 20 times worse.

First I think 10 games is BS. Second, here's a good question no matter if you are for the suspension or against it. Answer objectively.....Does Gillies make the hits he made (either Pitt or Minn) if it's a clean game? In other words is Gillies "initiating" or "reacting"?

I hear you on the code. I just thought the 3 lines of skilled players idea was a creative attempt to remove the Godards and Cookes from the game entirely. Players will fight as long as there is hockey but having players on the ice whose principle job is to intimidate and possibly injure the other teams skilled players is a stupid concept that is driven by the NHL.

It's probably a different thread topic, but even though people complain about "excessive stickwork" in international hockey where fighting is banned, I love watching international games, especially when they're played on the bigger ice surface that puts a premium on skill and speed and leaves plodders like Boogard behind. Hits are just as hard but the speed and space makes it harder to hit.

The NHL weighed the possibility of larger ice in the 80's/90's before the majority of today's arenas were built but owners wanted nothing to do with a several hundred fewer prime seats in their arenas. Too bad imo. They could have emphasized speed and skill and virtually eliminated the thuggery that is too much part of the game today. The 3 line concept was just another fantasy to accomplish the same thing in a different way because the ice size is obviously never going to change.

The key word, of course, is sadly "fantasy".

So basically it is OK that the Islanders are treated different then the other teams. Idiot! That is the whole thing that STARTED the issue to begin with.

I was just watching the end of HNIC from last night on the NHLN. On the post game they were talking about it and all agreed it wasn't even a suspendable hit. McLean called Gillies a sacrificial lamb and said that they put the hammer down on him because it was easy.

Since Clutterbuck got nothing. It just proves the league is NOT really serious about these hits. It should not matter what team is on the front of the sweater or what name is on the back. But it does. And THAT is the problem.

If Gillies keeps up this act, I wonder what his next punishment will be.

Hey KROMBACH72, did you have any problem with Clutterbuck's hit?

I'm a Leaf fan and a huge non-Trevor-Gillies fan, and felt he deserved to have the book thrown at him for the hit on Tangredi.

But seriously he shouldn't have even received a penalty for the hit on Clutterbuck. There was nothing wrong with it. Unlike Clutterbuck's hit, which was truly dirty.

Briere highsticks Nielsen on faceoff. OHHH Daniel got 3 games suspension. yep 3 That's Consistantcy for ya.

How do you explain then that Daniel Paille was suspended for 4 games after a clean hit ?

Concerning Gillies, it isn't any different than with Chris Simon, he is the victim of the NHL doing everything they can to please the bleeding hearts at the hockey news and TSN. Meanwhile Pronger gets away with murder and Scott Stevens is in the HHOF when they've done far worse than enforcing and throwing payback hits.
