Brian Rafalski remains sidelined as Red Wings end five-game trip against slumping Coyotes

Quote:
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Defenseman Brian Rafalski will miss his fifth game in a row tonight when the Detroit Red Wings visit the Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena (8 p.m., Fox Sports Detroit).

General manager Ken Holland said an MRI on Rafalski's back showed no damage. He just needs rest.

The Red Wings wrap up a five-game road trip against a Coyotes club that is winless in five (0-4-1).

Red Wings coach Mike Babcock shuffled his lines at the morning skate but said this isn't necessarily how they'll look in the game.

"We're just trying to go,'' Babcock said. "It was a great day off for us yesterday. We needed a day off badly. We've had a stretch here on the road with seven of nine, we had nine games in 15 nights. It was a grind for us. I believe yesterday freshened us all up. So we'll see what happens here tonight with our lines.''

Here are the lines they skated with:

Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom
Hudler-Filppula-Franzen
Cleary-Modano-Bertuzzi
Miller-Helm-Abdelkader
Draper (scratched)

Lidstrom-Stuart
Ericsson-Kronwall
Kindl-Salei

Howard (starting)
MacDonald

Howard is 4-0-1, with a 2.14 goals-against average and .932 save percentage, against Phoenix in the regular season.

Detroit Red Wings in middle of three-way race for Western Conference crown

Quote:
SAN JOSE, Calif. — While a cluster of teams competes for the final five playoff berths in the Western Conference, the Detroit Red Wings suddenly are in a three-way race for the top spot.

The conference-leading Vancouver Canucks are within striking range. But the red-hot San Jose Sharks are quickly closing the gap from behind.

Vancouver has 89 points, Detroit 85 and San Jose 82. Each team has 17 games remaining. The Sharks have 11 home games remaining. Detroit has 10 home games and Vancouver, which has gone 5-6 in its past 11, has the toughest schedule, with only six home games.

“The whole West, it’s getting tighter,” Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen the standings so tight this late in the year.”

The Sharks beat the Red Wings 3-1 on Thursday for their eighth consecutive victory. They have defeated Detroit three times in a row and believe they can move up in the standings.

“They’re not out of reach. They’re definitely within striking distance,” Sharks forward Ryane Clowe said. “Vancouver’s ahead of us too, and they’re not out of range.”

San Jose coach Todd McLellan, whose team is 17-2-1 in its past 20 games, is not preoccupied with the standings.

Hudler's off Datsyuk's line.

I think I just heard him go cold.

With them only starting 4 defensemen..

Let's try and turn this road trip around..

I still would like to see what would happen if Modano played with Zetterberg and Datsyuk.

Yeah, the 4 defensemen thing was a typo. I think I accidently deleted that line before I submitted it. Oh well, the deliberate mistake is still there.

We need to win against a struggling Coyotes to make this roadtrip a success. Teams are starting to get hot and catchup so we need to string a few more wins together. Why can't we ever string 8-10 wins together? Or pull a Pittsburgh and go unbeaten for like 20 games or something.

Phoenix usually play well against us so it's going to be a tough matchup but I'm sure the Wings can bounce back.

Let's Go Red Wings!!

I'd like to know why people think Modano has anything left that would be useful on a scoring line. Maybe he does, but I sure haven't seen any evidence of it this year.

Nice to get some detective work again.

Potential spoilers below:

Phoenix has 10 OTL, Teams' points, Ro(s)tislav Klesla, Andrew Eb(b)ett

He'll probably lose a point tonight.

The Wings really need to start getting them points, SJ and Chicago are nipping at our heels. There is also Vancouver who I really want to pass - home ice for the playoffs pleeaaassse!

Lets Go Red Wings!

I decided to play around with colors

I believe your line-up card is wrong in the thread starter. Boedker is the third line LW, since Pyatt is on there twice. Boedker has also been on a roll lately so he could be someone to watch.

Bissonnette is highly duobt is in.. MacLean should be the 4th liner in his place..

Also, not sure why we really talk much about lines. The odds of those lines really staying majority of the game are the same odds of me driving to MGM, throwing all i got on a number and winning.

Go Howie!

Meh, you could do worse than the Phoenix broadcast crew on Center Ice, though their on-ice reporter is a moron.
