Andrew Smith, RW, Victoriaville Tigres

AND Joey Laleggia, D, Penticton Vees

Probably the guy with the biggest upside of the invites so far and a hometown kid. I remember chickenman92 clamoring to get this guy some attention on these boards... anyways, here's a small profile:

Very excited about the Laleggia invite.

Would have been happy to use a pick on this kid, so getting him for free(possibly), and him being a local kid who grew up a Canucks fan is all gravy.

He's the type of player that if he doesn't sign now, he will be one of the top college free agents in whichever year he decides to leave college, and will be highly sought after.

I like the sounds of this kid. We need to get some more homegrown talent.

Add four years of growth and development and we could have a pretty good player on our hands.

If he's on the Canucks' hands, he won't be going to the NCAA. He'd have to sign a contract at prospect camp and his eligibility would be hosed.

Pretty much. It's really unfortunate.

From the interview he sounds like a huge nucks fan too. Was at both game 7s of the Hawks and Bruins series.

EDIT:

While we're at the BCHL I hope the Canucks see if they can get Destry Straight of the Coquitlam Express out...

So its either get a look at him now and wait four years and hope nobody else notices or if he impress and get him in the system? So far I have been impressed with the scouting staff on these matters.

Yep, awkward situation. He has one more draft year, i think so if he blows the WCHA away, he'll be drafted by someone at least. Maybe us?

But he does seem to have the Tambellini mentality; had several camp invites, but once he heard about the Canucks invite, he took it right away. Maybe he'll hold out for us in the end if all goes well.

Going to a very good program at Denver. Can see him dominating at that level and with the time/space they have.

Skilled offensive D-man. From Burnaby. I like

Did Blomstrand get taken in the import draft after all? It'd be nice to see his development in North America, if he's really projected to fit well into the rougher style of play over here.

Well the Canucks would have until the start of the NHL season to sign him so they could invite him to training camp to get a better look at him. But you guys are right, he has one more year of draft eligibility before he becomes a "UFA". Although if signed he'd technically be a RFA at the end of his ELC. If he was no longer draft eligible I would think it'd be a decent situation for the Canucks. Gillis and co. wouldn't have to worry about him being drafted and could sort of have a handshake agreement that they'll offer him a contract after a certain number of years. He's a Canucks fan and since there isn't much negotiations with ELCs aside from bonuses it would be easy to sign him them. Ah well.

Can we not just trade Ellington and/or Tochkin for futures? Clear out some contracts please.

Nope Blomstrand not taken. The whole 2nd round of the import draft was basically "pass" ... no one got taken.

That's unfortunate. Wasn't too fond of the pick at the time, so I was hoping he'd be able to come over to North America and not end up as another Mats Froshaug.

If we signed Laleggia would we be able to assign him to a WHL team that held his rights?

Chances are he's pretty set on going to college.

I definately think he would be torn with the option of signing with his boy hood team or going the college route....who owns his WHL rights.

Good be another Connauton.

Tiranis, do you know who holds Laleggia's WHL rights? Anyone?

edit* as far as I can tell, he was completely overlooked at the WHL level.

How does a scenario like that work? If you sign a player you want to play in major junior, but his rights arent owned....can a team like the Giants or Rockets just add him?

edit#2....it seems he is on the Medicine Hat Tigers protected list or was at one point....I'd have no problems letting him develop there...

Was invited by the Red Wings last year to their prospects camp. A quote back from 09 when he was ranked #140, I believe:

Quote:
Zanetti is what he is. He's a big, mean, physical defenseman who plays hard and will drop the gloves. His skating is average, and he's not a wizard with the puck, but as long as he plays a safe, defensive first game, he's fine. Big defenseman who can play the body and are good positionally rarely go through the draft undrafted.

So a rough list of the likely Penticton roster so far:

Under contract:

Peter Andersson, D, Frolunda (Sweden)
Steven Anthony, F, Saint John (QMJHL)
Darren Archibald, F, Niagara (OHL)
Sebastian Erixon, D, Timra (Sweden)
Adam Polasek, D, PEI (QMJHL)
Anton Rodin, F, Brynas (Sweden)
Kellen Tochkin, F, Medicine Hat (WHL)

Unsigned draft picks, confirmed or likely to attend:

Frankie Corrado, D, Sudbury (OHL)
Alex Friesen, F, Niagara (OHL)
Alexandre Grenier, F, Halifax (QMJHL)
Sawyer Hannay, D, Halifax (QMJHL)
David Honzik, G, Victoriaville (QMJHL)
Jonathan Iilahti, G, Espoo (Finland)
Nicklas Jensen, F, Oshawa (OHL)
Pathrik Westerholm, F, Malmo (Sweden)

Confirmed invitees:

Joey LaLeggia, D, Penticton (BCHL)
Ian Saab, D, Lewiston (QMJHL)
Karel St. Laurent, G, Surrey (BCHL)
Andrew Smith, F, Victoriaville (QMJHL)
Ponthus Westerholm, F, Malmo (Sweden)
Marc Zanetti, D, Ottawa (OHL)

Unsigned draft picks, attendance not certain:

Ludwig Blomstrand, F, Djurgardens (Sweden)
Henrik Tommernes, D, Frolunda (Sweden)

Might be a "veteran" or two, as well - Prab Rai seems like a possibility, after losing all of last season. Stefan Schneider and Taylor Ellington are probably less likely.

What about the college boys, Price and McNally?

They attended last year, on their own coin, like Schroeder and
White (gasp) did before them for a couple of years.

You'd think McNally would be back for another look. His folks
can afford it, especially given his big fat scholarship to Harvard.

That's the development thing in Vancouver next month, they might be at that. Penticton is the rookie tournament in early September with the other teams (8 this year, apparently) that the NCAA guys can't play in.

Gotcha. I was drooling over the July gathering and slipped on my senses. Thanks.

He protects the puck in traffic really well for his size and as he continues to get stronger that part of his game will only get better. Hopefully he has gotten even bigger than what he showed up at last years development camp. I think he will be the prospect that impresses most at camp.
