Just curious, not familar with all aspects of the business side of hockey, but why do you have to give *4* first round draft picks? Would you have to give up 4 first rounders for any RFA or is it just because it's Stamkos? Where do they get 4 first rounders from?
WHAT IS THE COMPENSATION REQUIRED FOR SIGNING A RFA TO AN OFFER SHEET?
For 2008-09, the compensation due for signing a RFA to an Offer Sheet is:
$863,156 or less
$863,156 - $1,307,812
3rd round pick
$1,307,812 - $2,615,625
2nd round pick
$2,615,623 - $3,923,437
1st and 3rd round pick
$3,923,437 - $5,231,249
1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick
$5,231,249 - $6,539,062
Two 1st's, one 2nd, one 3rd round pick
$6,539,062 or more
Four 1st round picks
So basically it would cost 4 first round picks because the amount that Stamkos will be offered has to be well over $6,539,062 for the bolts to even consider not matching. Think 10 to 11 mil range. Also all picks have to belong to Toronto and not another team. So since we don't have our 3rd round pick next year if we wanted to offer sheet a player in the $863,157-$6,539,062 we wouldn't be able to do it unless we traded back for our pick.
Forgot to add we are not getting Stamkos it is a pipe dream. Tampa will move out other players before it ever gets to that unless Stamkos himself wants to come to Toronto and refuses to sign.
It all depends on how much he signed for. If he signed for 3 mill, I believe its a first and third. But they must be your picks. If Leafs had, say, Philis first next year but not their own, they cant sign him to one unless they get their pick back.
But I doubt he leaves. Tavares is alot more realistic next year. Tampa is winning, Stevie Y was his idol growing up and he gets to stay in Florida for the winter. Why would he leave?
Ah I see. It's based on salary. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
I'm laughing at your comments, Stamkos is not elite? People I would kill to have him on the Leafs this guy is a powerplay beast he practically scores on every powerplay, this guy is a great shooter and overall a guy that can easily get 40+ seasons and produce about 90 points a season.. Are the Leafs gonna sign him? I think not, it's out of the question and it's highly unlikely... Allthough a secondary prize would be Lecavlier
IMO Stamkos is an elite player with other good players around him. Like Kessel would be. Id really like to see what he can do without St Louis feeding him.
Hes not a Crosby or Ovechkin because he doesnt single handedly make a great defensive play, skate it up ice through 5 guys and score the winner in OT like OV or Crosby can.
To be fair, Ovechkin single handedly making a great defensive play before skating up the ice through 5 guys and scoring hasn't really happened much before this season. He looks to do better in his own end now, though less dangerous offensively as a trade-off.
Plus he's a few years ahead in development, isn't he?
Stamkos was -4 in 2009-2010. The Leafs don't need anymore defensive liabilities. Now then Matt Cooke was +14, there's some character we need to add to our boys. Oh yeah... Kessel sucks and we should fire Wilson.
Seriously though, I don't think he's a good fit for Toronto at the moment and we're probably low on his priority list(although given he is Canadian you never know I suppose.) He'd probably demand a kings ransom and our team would benefit from a few players given today's cap driven NHL. He'd probably prefer a contender as well.
Stamkos is the kind of player that makes teams a contender.
Tampa has 22M cap space next season and 12 players under contract.. When they sign stabile for MIN 8M cap hit they have 13M to sign 10 players which sounds like a lot but really isn't. I'd say Malone or Lecavlier will be shopped if they can get a decent return. I would personally love to sign stamkos long term.. Maybe Burke can trade our next 4 first rounders and through in a 2nd so he doesn't have to offer sheet him (joking...sorta)
Tampa would be idiots if they let him go. They will probably have to cut loose Lecavalier to make room for it but they would never let him go.
It'll be hard to get rid of Vinny. No team is taking that contract, and ownership doesn't want to pay him all that money to play in the minors. I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that Stamkos gets moved somehow. Not necessarily likely, but it's possible.
Tampa will keep him, so we wont get him, but I would trade every single player on our roster for him, or as many picks as Tampa wants.
Some of you guys are nuts on here. He's on pace for back to back 51 goal seasons in his 2nd and 3rd seasons in the league.
Its funny how when you talk about guys like Dion or Phil, its like "oh those guys are still young, they will get better", but somehow not only has Stamkos hit his peak in year 3, but he's also overrated. Very interesting logic there.
Who are his peers? This sounds like more of a debate on what a generational talent is.
With 9 goals in the last 18 games, that'll be two 50-goal seasons by the age of 21. It's more than the "Great 8" can boast.
I agree..How can anyone argue he is not a generational talent?
Did fans forget...Kessel had 36 goals at age 21....and he is an elite sniper.....but a guy who will have 2 50 goal seasons(by 21) in an age where there are less than 5 50 goal scorers per season...he is not a generational talent?
Stamkos is too good to ever become a Leaf....Leafs don't get players like Steven Stamkos. Ever.
Side Note: Steven Stamkos favorite team is the Toronto Maple Leafs..He was born and raised in Markham Ontario. I used to work with his dad and he told me that Stamkos wished he was drafted by the Leafs. Stamkos is a humble good ole Canadian boy...would become one of the greatest Leafs of all time.
