Nice!

Not often you can blurt out a positive without seeing the dollars, but at almost any benchmark within his likely window, that's a good signing. He just improved as the season wore on.

Hope its no higher than current deal, would much prefer 2.5 or below.

Still, happy to have him back either way.

Nine goals in his last 13 games, starting with the Chicago OT winner. A very solid penalty killer as well.

Curious what the cap hit will be, though. GMGM & Fishman have a delicate cap situation to navigate. Fehr could be an expendable asset unless he steps his game up in the playoffs (along with a couple others).

I really don't think it will be higher than his current $2.8/yr salary. But I wouldn't be surprised if, given the timing, it's exactly $2.8. Anything less would be a nice success for GMGM.

this is good. as these things often take some time to work thru the process its possible that knuble's hot streak at the end was a direct result of feeling the certainty of remaining part of the team.

i also think mcphee confirmed for himself the value of enough quality veteran leadership in the first week after wideman and arnott arrived that knuble had to stay. hannan started that adjustment in mcphee's thinking and arnott closed the deal. all that said, knuble is the best player of all of the caps 30+ year old players.

edit: its probably also worth a mention that Knuble is the defacto Captain of the team. Its Ovechkin's team, but Knuble runs the day to day operations.

LeBrun reporting $2 million. I think that's what I had guessed whenever I was trying to balance rosters, so I'll take it.

I support this signing. He could have been our masterton candidate this year. I still love his locker room speech on 24/7. This is not going to be another laugher.

knuble doesnt run the day to day stuff sorry Tex. He seems like one of those quiet lunch pail lead by example guys. Brooks seems more like our day to day guy than Knoobs. Knuble is one of the quality people group that George favors, no chance of a locker room cancer.

* good deal for mcphee considering there is no bonus cushion next season.
* rh, there's a difference between talking and getting things done. when something
needs to be said, mike knuble says it. i see brooks laich talking to the media, but i see
no evidence that he is the vocal spirit in that room. from 24/7 it was knuble that stood up and said enough. all i recall brooksie saying was he was "tired of this ****" under his breath where it recquired subtitles to know what he said.

no knock on laich. he is not the captain figure that many here think he might be. he's an honest hockey player that is well liked and respected by his teammates, but he doesnt carry a letter on his sweater when there are 5 different players that do.

Phenominal price. I was plugging in a $2-2.5 estimate when doing my cap projections earlier, and some thought that I was being too optimisitc.

This is as good as we could have hoped for.

I don't think there's any question that McPhee sold Knuble on the fact that we're going to be really tight to the cap, and we need to re-sign Laich and Arnott. The report this week was that the cap is going to be $62.2 next year. Here's a $61.8m roster with estimates for unsigned guys in bold:

Ovie (9.538) - Backstrom (6.7) - Knuble (2.0)
Laich (3.5) - Arnott (3.0) - Semin (6.7)
Chimera (1.875) - Johansson (.9) - Fehr (2.2)
Beagle (.512) - Gordon (.9) - Hendricks (.825)
King (.637)

Alzner (2.3) - Carlson (.846)
Schultz (2.75) - Green (5.25)
Poti (2.875) - Wideman (3.875)
Erskine (1.5)
Sloan (.7)

Neuvirth (1.15)
Varly (1.25)

And, obviously, that roster has some deadish weight on it with Poti maybe never being fully healthy, Chimmer probably not being worth his salary, and Sloan being Sloan. It is certainly plausible that we could put Sloan in Hershey, do something with Poti and re-sign Hannan for $3m or so.

I don't think in the sense that one D goes to allow another D to arrive or vice versa with forwards. I think it's possible, his #'s are slightly down but I wouldn't limit it to Arnott.

honestly, if knuble is worth $2.0m, arnott isn't worth $3m. maybe thats part of mcphee's plan as well. if arnott wont sign a one year, he's not staying either. mcphee seems to be pretty adept at keeping his team together.

the only players that leave are players he doesnt want to keep.

I don't think Arnott's negotiations are necessarily influenced by Knuble's, who is a 39 year old guy taking a discount. Arnott is 2 full years younger. Two years ago, Knuble signed for $5.6m over 2 years. Inflate that a bit with the inflation of the cap since then, and you have $3m/yr for Arnott. I think that's reasonable. It's still a pretty considerbale pay cut for a guy making $4.5m.

Whether we can get him on a 1/yr deal is a big question. I'm not convinced we can. He's going to be looking for 2.
