Dan Girardi to EDM in off-season

What would the price be coming from Edmonton's side?

A pretty big price. Offer up.

Seriously? I know he's good but is it basically going to cost an overpayment to bring him over?

Would Tom Gilbert be someone the Rangers are into? I personally doubt it but if it is he'd be available too.

Yes, seriously. He's the most experienced defenseman the Rangers have, and is a great compliment to Staal.

And, yeah, no thanks, Gilbert is of absolutely no interest.

Who would you say carries the load defensively on that line? I know Staal gets all the hype but do you think Girardi is on equal terms with him in that regard?

He's up there.

He plays a ton of minutes.

He may be relatively expendable once McDonagh and Sauer become more experienced, but only for a puck mover version of Girardi (whose name is not Tom Gilbert). He's on a really solid contract and can do it all for the Rangers.

Fair enough, I can see why the asking price is high on him. I've always been a fan but haven't seen much of him this year. From what I've seen he's easily having his best season and might be entering his prime really soon.

I doubt the Oilers consider giving up any of Whitney/Petry/Marincin/Teubert for the guy so we probably don't have a deal here. Thanks for the info though.

Next offseason he becomes expendable, in all likelihood.

It would really take a very big offer to get Girardi right now.

Offensive prospects are more in need than defensive, if you ask me. We would surely listen to offers for some top flight offensive prospects.

I used to call Girardi a 3rd pairing defenseman (mostly to joke with Rangers fans) but I must eat crow. He's been stellar this season, without a doubt a top-4 defenseman on a fair contract.

You're a Jersey fan....what's the price on Mark Fayne? As an Oilers fan I'd be willing to chalk up any of the non-Whitney/Petry/Marincin/Teubert defensemen in return for a package.

I don't know if Lou would be willing to trade Fayne. The kid has been really good this season and was fairly unknown by most fans at the beginning of the season. Came out of nowhere and has been a mainstay on our top pairing with Tallinder. He's fresh out of college and not looking out of place in the NHL. He might be expendable once Taormina comes back and when Merill, Gelinas, Urbom, Burlon etc are ready. It's one of those cases where you can't really put a price on him, I don't think he's worth an Edmonton 2nd but I also wouldn't be happy with a 3rd.

He's an excellent skater, long reach, stays in good position (makes a few mistakes here and there but every rookie does). What impresses me is that he's never shaken or scared, always poised with the puck and gets his shot on net. Not really physical but is good with his stick. I think he ends up as good defensively as Tallinder but with more offense. Like I really think he could hit 25-30 points if he works on his shot.

Good for you.

The Rangers don't want to trade Girardi. Ladislav Smid isn't nearly enough.

Solid #2 defender? Check
NHL blocked shots leader? Check
Workhorse who eats minutes like Wellwood eats donuts? Check
Rangers defensive points leader? Check
Great value long term deal? Check

Trading for spare parts in a Canadian prospect system? Only on HF!

Given Edmonton's situation I could only see them doing a quantity for quality deal if they were trading for a top 4 d-man. They've got too many bottom 6 forwards and 3rd pairing d-men in their system.

Girardi's value to the Rangers is more than what most teams would be willing to offer in a trade. I'd be surprised if someone was able to come up with an offer than pleased both sides.

Girardi is one of those guys that's more valuable to the Rangers than he would be on the trade market. Thus, you'd have to overpay to get him.

Not me. Not with the way Girardi is playing. Petry for Girardi is something I would definitely take. Hesitantly, yes but Girardi and Whitney as our top defense pairing? Yes please.

The Rangers have a TON of bottom-6 forwards and a TON of defensemen in their system.

Staal, Girardi, Sauer, McDonagh

MDZ, Kundratek, Valentenko, McIlrath, Pashnin

Not including Gilroy and Eminger who are 27

Thats 4 1st round picks, a top-pairing undrafted defenseman(Girardi) and an already top-4 former 2nd rounder in Sauer.

Not even talking about Kundratek who as a rookie in the AHL has been superb and Pashnin who was the 1st overall pick in the KHL draft taken in the 7th round by the Rangers.

Wow... Smid and a 3rd? Apparently OP doesn't have a clue of Girardi's value to NYR.

I would think that the combination of his contract - and the relative lack of experience on the Rangers blueline make Girardi's value really high for the Rangers. I love how well the young d-men look, but IMO Girardi's just not a guy that the Rangers should move without a overpayment coming back.

And I REALLY hate when people say that - but Girardi's a perfect fit for what the Rangers need, and I can't see them moving him unless there was a signficant upgrade somewhere else on the roster. And a good player like Smid + a marginal pick isn't anywhere close to that.
