Playing the odds would be just to pick every favorite in 6. But how boring would that be?

Bleh, Vancouver better start losing soon.

For reference, my tips in our office betting:
WSH in 5
PHI in 4
BOS in 7
TB in 6

CHI in 7
SJ in 6
DET in 7
ANA in 6

Why ANYONE thought Chicago would win is beyond me. The REAL reason they won - Dustin B. - is gone. What he did on the scoresheet doesn't even come CLOSE to explaining his effect on the other team. He is Sean Avery the way Sean Avery was supposed to be.

He did exactly what Holmstrom does for Detroit.

I never got that impression of Holmstrom as a pest.

So he's nothing close to what Byfuglien is.

How big of a factor was he in 2009?

Anyway, I looked at it as Chokers + 7uongo vs. their Nemesis. Too bad that they seem to have forgotten how to choke.

I thought that Buff's biggest effect on Vancouver was getting Luongo off his game by constantly getting in his face.

I don't think it was as much Vancouver choking as it was Byfuglien just getting into every single one of their heads.

That was a big part of it, but the thing is, every single Canuck was thinking about Byfuglien the entire series. Also, some of the stuff that Byfuglien was doing was very illegal. I don't think Holmstrom really resorted to that all that much, but Byfuglien was constantly crashing into Luongo.

The pest factor is a really underrated thing, I feel. Guys like Avery, Buff, etc. get a lot more important come playoff time, because they have a 7 game series to piss off and annoy the other team. You can bet that the longer the series goes, the more these guys get under the skin of the opposition.

Did you see the second goal yesterday? Rafalski scored on low shot through the middle, but only because bryzgalov was more concerned with slashing Holmström and didn't have his stick down.

Fair enough, but again, Buff did a whole lot more than just slapping Luongo around.

As a Devils fan I'd have expected you to be the last one to complain about winning because it's "boring"!

The interesting part of prediction games to me is breaking them down and figuring how to win. I don't see what's interesting about making a prediction that's not as likely to come out correctly.

If what's most effective is too simplistic, the game should be changed. One interesting twist a playoff pool could have is giving extra points for less likely seeds/#s of games. Until then, 6 it is.

That being said I don't agree with playing the odds all the time as far as seeds go. I thought Nashville was a better team than Anaheim - Anaheim has been overplaying its shot differential and goal differential, and Hiller was an important part of them - so I took them in 6. Every other series I took the higher seed in 6.

This is on the Sharks board pool where I made my real predictions. On the mainboard pool I picked the Rags and Hawks because I figured, with so many people, the only way to win would be to pick a couple series almost no one else got. That may have been erroneous thinking. Regardless it's not looking good now. But at least I have the Sharks board pool.

going for 6 only makes sense if you give the other team a shot at winning... I really didn't so I made a few high-risk-high-reward predictions.

Agreed. My biggest fear right now is Chicago goes in "nothing to lose" mode and pushes the series to 6 or something. In terms of confidence and injury potential, that'd be the worst (I'm not acknowledging the improbable outcome that would be technically worse , so don't even mention it...).

Good to see Boston get a win in. Hopefully Tampa can rebound from the loss tonight, I bet them all the way to the ECF in my school pool, so I need them to beat the Pens.

I don't THINK they'll blow the series.. but I hope they do. That team has no heart, no passion.. at all.

Even if they win, they definitely look much more beatable than they did before.

I'm not as sold on them being Cup contenders as I was...

To early to say they have no heart. If they blow this serious then yes they have no heart and some serious issues...and a new coaching staff will be employed quite obviously.

I think they might need a more outspoken, passionate captain than Henrik Sedin. I love the guy, he's an amazing offensive talent, but I think he would be better employed just focusing on offense.. I'd much rather see a guy like Samuelsson as the captain.. but honestly, I just don't know if the Canucks even have a guy who oozes captain material.

Most people in this city thought a gritty character like Kesler would have been a better captain, but I have nothing negative to say about Henrik Sedin.

I seriously think this team has chicken **** for coaching. Vigneault and his main assistant Rick Bowness have been making retarded decisions all year, despitea great season I was fully expected we would have to work through a massive coaching disadvantage against Quenneville.
