The Larry Brooks Thread

Since Larry has been tearing up the boards lately, maybe we should have a thread to just discuss him.

Dickie Dunn was Larry Brooks before Larry Brooks.

go to http://www.jobpredictor.com/ and type in Larry Brooks. See what his ideal job is, and you'll get a good idea of what kind of writer he is

Larry Brooks has bled Ranger Blue as a fan for nigh on forty years and it's absolutely shameful that he's so unmercifully mocked on this very board. Truth is, the man is perhaps one of the most stand-up "Regular Joes" in the business that you'd ever want to meet. Go ask the rest of the NHL beat writers who saw fit to elect him President of their Professional Association.

Larry Brooks has parlayed a love of the game and his own talent into perhaps the best writing gig you can have in the biggest hockey market in the world. That's no small potatoes my friends. He will likely achieve immortality with an induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame for his professional accomplishments.

Brook's sources are impecable and highly-placed. Because every rumour he passes on doesn't materialize doesn't mean there isn't a legitimate genesis for it. That's how the real hockey world beyond internet message boards works.

Don't get me wrong, I've got nothing against "Regular Joe" Larry Brooks--my problem is that about 1 of every 20 rumours that he reports comes true.

And it's a problem that he's bleeding ranger blue in his articles. He should try to be a little more subjective (for example: He had been reporting that "sources" say that the Rangers will get Jaromir Jagr for 3 years before they actually did. And when they did, he didn't report it!) But, although he grills Glen Sather, he never misses the opprotunity to rip into the Isles or Devils for miniscule things. Frankly, he's a bad writer.

I know beat reporters more or less get Stockhom Syndrome with the teams they cover, however Larry's "Bleeding Ranger Blue" is over the top. He branded the Blueshirts "the most important team in hockey," and his "render unto the Rangers your most talented players small market clubs, for the world revolves around MSG," damages his credibility further. He's been the biggest cheerleader of the Rangers' checkbook since 1994.

What makes his trade speculation so bad is it's often so obviously wrong once he throws the rumor out. With his low batting average maybe Larry should start questioning the reliabilty of Deepthroat, or whoever is giving him his information.

He maybe a great guy in person, but on the page he's just a buffon.

He can cheerlead for the Rangers all he wants in my book, but his almost hysterical rants against small market teams and the NHL in general make it difficult to take anything he has to say seriously.

I hope BR is very very wrong about Brooks ending up in the HHOF one day, because he's the top American hockey writer on my **** list. He's venomous, and his referring to himself in the third person is damn annoying.

I guess we don't have to deal with his antics anymore, as he apparently has been promoted to front page director.
