Lidstrom is the best d-man in the game...how can he be underrated?

And for most skilled (well I put it as potential) it is easily Dmitri Kalinin for Buffalo.

I dont see how anyone but Kolzig gets votes for Washington. Ovechkin isnt here yet and Halpern well he is talented but I dont think he is on Kolzigs level.

Everyone has their own opinions. I think Niedermayer is better than Lidstrom.

I guess I'm not surprised that so far no one mentioned York as the Oilers' best player...he's one of the league's better kept secrets.

Scott Niedermayer and Chris Pronger are up there with him.

It's too close to call.

For one thing, I am talking about current times. Lidstrom wasn't even nominated for the Norris Trophy this year, and for good reason (ask any knowledgable hockey analyst and they will tell you that even Schnieder was better then Lidstrom this year). Combine that with a passable playoffs and the World Championship in which he was barely noticable, Lidstrom didn't have a good year at all (at least not by his high standards) .

Lang on the other hand was leading the scoring race for most of the season and may well have won it if he hadn't been injured late in the season. He also had a decent playoffs.

Sure Lidstrom has a better reputation, but I think the statistics speak for themselves: He was not the best player on the Red Wings this year.

In terms of skill, Zherdev is one of the elite in the game.

He just has to establish himself as a star... and he will do so over the next couple years.

So now the best/most skilled player on a team is determined by how they played during this past season only? May as well have just asked who each team's season MVP was.

I can't believe someone actually picked Yzerman for the Red Wings.

I picked no goalies. Difficult to judge whether a goalie is more "skilled" when the skillset required is drastically different.

It's Lehtinen for Dallas, not Modano and certainly not Turco.

I love him, in fact! I think he was not really hyped compared to players of his level in other drafts. However, I consider his skills way too raw for this list, unfortunately. There are a few other players in Carolina with an outside chance to impress in the nearby future too.

Same with Washington. I really liked what I saw of Semin. But unworthy of the list at this time. I also thought about naming Ron Francis just for kicks but really, what little success the Hurricanes had this year had more to do with collective play and busting their *****.
