Jays Disaster Could it Happen to the Leafs

Out of all of the Toronto sports franchises there is none that is as a big as disappointment as this years Blue Jays (possibly ever). Expectations were sky high at the beginning of the year with Vegas rating the Jays as the favourite to win the World Series (!). The expectations for the 2013 -14 Leafs is nowhere near as high but most pundits expect the Leafs to make the playoffs and be a contender in the EAST.

What do you think the chances are that last years performance was a fluke in the abbreviated season and that Leafs fans are in for as big of a letdown as Jays fans ?

My personal take is that I believe that its unlikely same fate will befall the Leafs because I believe as a group the team has an identity and is a cohesive group under Carlyle, and that the Leafs are much more of a team than the Jays are.

Up front, we've lost a bit of speed, but become a lot tougher to play against.

On D, with Gardiner in full-time, the replacement of Kostka/Holzer/Fraser with Ranger, and the potential arrival of Rielly, I'd say we've improved there too, especially from a puck possession standpoint (at the expense of some toughness).

In net, I feel a Reimer/Bernier tandem will only strengthen that position. I think people are going to be floored by Bernier's abilities.

So no, I don't see it happening. But then again, neither did Blue Jays fans. Hoping the team gels and Carlyle smartens up with his decision making.

Inappropriate thread, don't slander anyone else with the mess formerly known as the Blue Jays.

It's more apples and oranges because the leagues are so different. Past records don't dictate recent success especially with a team that had as much turnover as the Jays. The Leafs sucked in 2011/2012 but that didn't affect their standings this year.

Anyways, these threads aren't warranted. It's too knee-jerky and will bring out trollish comments.

Leafs are already a solid team. The Jays were just a bunch of players added to a mediocre (albeit very injured) team, many of them being overrated NL garbage (Johnson, Bonifacio, Dickey, Buehrle)

Great post. I think the major difference is that the Jays were a very good looking team on paper but had never played together before. Whereas the Leafs have shown in the abbreviated season that they have an identity ( big tough kick ass team in the mould of the Bruins) and look to be a cohesive team . However, the season was only 48 games long and they jumped 7 spots in the East from the 2012 season which is a huge move.

Jays were in first for a while before injuries to key players destroyed their hopes for playoffs

Asking the question is it possible that a team could be overrated is slanderous ? . Your kidding right ?

There's quite a bit of turnover on the Leafs this season, with Komisarek, MacArthur, Scrivens, Komarov, Kostka, Grabovski out the door, and some of those pieces were here a long time, so there will be some adjustments.

That said, the Jays basically went out and bought a team, so that's more akin to the New York Rangers trading a big chunk of their team away for Rick Nash, having chemistry problems and underachieving than what we have here.

I don't even think the expectations are that high...

The Jays were considered one of the favourites to win the World Series going into the season. Most Leafs fans are hoping to finish somewhere around where we finished last season (~5th) and many non-Leafs fans think that they're an outside shot at the playoffs. Hardly sky-high expectations.

Good think Leafs aren't been given the best odds for winning the cup this year, then.

The Leafs will be fine because their manager/coach isn't an idiot.

MMkay. Blame the players bud. They're the ones playing the game.

Jays brought in a whole bunch of new people, in some cases with unrealistic expectations.

Leafs are adding to the same core that succeeded last year. Don't agree with every move this summer, but we've been filling holes, not rebuilding the lineup.

No correlation between the two teams at all. The leafs have been getting more and more competitive every year. They finally made the playoffs and got some good experience. 3 really good pickups in Bernier, Clarkson and Bolland. Unless we get screwed with injuries, no chance this team misses the playoffs.

I am pretty sure the Leafs pitching staff will not go through the same problem the Jays have had the last two years.

Coaches come up with strategies , gameplans and should be prepared. Jays don't look prepared for games. Players reflect coaching . When a team is doing well, you don't say its all about players do you? No, coaching is the biggest aspect in any team sports.

everyone deserves blame for the Jays...except the fans...finally turning up in great numbers and watching an atrocity every night.
