Hasek signing to be announced Tuesday

The news conference will be at 10am tomorrow. The Score will likely be airing it, and maybe TSN as well.

It's a very interesting signing...a big gamble for Muckler to make...but it could pay huge dividends if there is a season next year.

I'm surprised it's rumored to be a multi-year deal.

Maybe the Sens will surprise us and announce another free agent signing as well?

That's what I'm thinking... it would explain why they took this long to announce this.

What number would Hasek wear? I mean Spezza has his usual one (#39) in Ottawa.

I'm guessing that the Spez will change his number, much to the dismay of the Spezza jersey owning fans. When he first came to the team, he wanted #9, but Havlat had that, his next choice would have been #19, which Schastlivy had at the time, so he settled for #39. He will probably take #19 if he changes.

Or it could be that Hasek was tying up some loose ends back in the Czech Rep and this was the first time he could be here. It probably wouldn't have made sense to have a press conference if he wasn't going to be there. Or maybe Melnyk wants to be there and this is the best timing for him.

They want a buzz, and a press conference does it more than by simply issuing a press release to TSN. It would be great if they announce they have also acquired Federov and Zhitnik but I'm not holding my breath.

Sounds Good to Me

Not that stats mean anything but Hasek has always played well after a injury
92-93 played 28 games
93-94 Won the Vezina

99-00 played 35 games
00-01 won Vevina
01-02 won the Cup and the Vezina

Even last year he lost all his games before getting hurt and was 4-0-2 after he tore his groin.

a great signing finally a first rate goalie for a first rate team

Here's to another 60+ game season by the Dominator

Nope, sorry, that's not what that sound is. It's the sound of JFJ crying because he just signed Backfour to a guaranteed $8 million next year

Good luck to Dom, and good luck to the Senators. But I agree, better have a backup plan. That groin of his ain't getting any younger...

If Dom's groin blows up, Mucks will probably explore the Kolzig option again. Only this time McPhee can't ask for Vermette and Muck's left testicle as Kolzig will be an UFA by season's end.

But if Hasek is healthy, watch out. He's a combative, competitive guy with a massive ego who absolutely loves a challenge. Even when he was Belfour's backup in Chicago, he thought he was better. 6 Vezinas and 2 MVPs later, his resume backs that.

Chara,

Kolzig may be the backup plan but you got it wrong that he is a UFA after next season. Kolzig is signed through 05-06 season.

Good call, Fisher...

The Senators welcomed Hasek by having Jason Spezza give up his No. 39 to the goalie. Spezza will now wear No. 19.

Hasek for a base salary of two million. For that kind of money, I think it's a great move.

You are correct; I had already written off next season prematurely. Still Kolzig's salary at $6.25M could force McPhee's hand with Ouellet and Stana waiting in the wings, especially if they fall out of the playoff hunt early.

That being said, $6.25M of payroll might be better spent on say: Sergei Fedorov...

If Hasek fails, we try Prusek. If Prusek fails, we try Emery. If Emery fails, we make a trade. Simple progression, not much risk, and EVENTUALLY, one of Emery or Prusek has to show thier stuff, or were screwed anyways

Muckler is the one, back in his Buffalo days, who made a trade with Chicago for an unknown Czech backup who had a very...different....style. This decision turned out to be the best of his career and in my opinion he now thinks he's holding on to the next Czech backup with a crazy style but good at stopping pucks that will be a future Vezina trophy.... So me thinks Muckler likes Prusek A LOT and Pruske will play over 30 games, even if Hasek's health is 100%.

I listened to Team 1200 for the first time in ages this morning. I liked what Gord Wilson had to say. I worry about Hasek playing every other night in the playoffs and the lack of scoring.

I hope this works out because I'm a fan. However; if this team doesn't make a move up front for a grittier player - we'll just lose 1-0 with Hasek in nets.

The best thing about the signing is the amount of money. The only way Hasek gets big bucks is if the team wins.

Imagine that Yashin wore 19, then he gets traded for Spezza (partly) and Spezza ends up with it.
