Flyers 2010/11 twenty-goal club

The incredible depth of scoring on the Flyers can be seen from the fact that the team may get NINE (ie all the top three lines) players scoring over 20 goals this season.

Let's begin a countdown thread. As of today, 38 games played. 42 games marks the midway point.

If at 42 games, all nine have 10 or more goals .. they are on pace.

After the 38th game, the following five players have more than 10 goals:

Richards, Carter, Briere, Giroux, Zherdev. (all at least 13)

Three are at nine goals : Nodl, Hartnell, Leino.

And JVR has 8.

WILL THEY MAKE IT???

I think for this to happen, Flyers will have to continue their habit of scoring at least 4-5 goals almost every single game. 2-1 or 3-2 tightly played victories wont do it.

Wouldn't it be the 41th?

if any don't make it, my money would be nodl (i'm loving the scoring, but still not believing it lol) and zherdev (might not get enough ice time).

How about the defense?
Right now, they have 8 goals combined. Will they make it to 20 as a group?

Well, all 9 players are pacing like 20 goals scorers:

Briere: 0.51 GPG - 42 goals in 82 games
Carter: 0.42 GPG - 34 goals in 82 games
Giroux: 0.42 GPG - 34 goals in 82 games
Zherdev: 0.37 GPG - 30 goals in 82 games
Richards: 0.34 GPG - 28 goals in 82 games
Nodl: 0.31 GPG - 25 goals in 82 games
vanRiemsdyk: 0.24 GPG - 20 goals in 82 games
Leino: 0.24 GPG - 20 goals in 82 games
Hartnell: 0.24 GPG - 20 goals in 82 games

Unfortunately, since not all of them have played every game, their actual pacings are lower than 20 goals.

With JVR turning it up I think 9 is definitely possible, but I'll go with 7 simply because its unlikely all 9 of those guys stay healthy enough to get in the necessary number of games.

I think 7 will. Richards, Carter, Giroux, Briere, Zherdev, Hartnell, and either JVR or Leino.

By the way, what is the most 20 goal scorers a team has ever had? I really can't imagine a team having 9...

There was a thread about this like a month back.

http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=850728

Bruins had 11 in 1977-78:
· Peter McNab-41
· Terry O'Reilly -29
· Bobby Schmautz -27
· Stan Jonathan-27
· Jean Ratelle -25
· Rick Middleton-25
· Wayne Cashman -24
· Greg Sheppard -23
· Brad Park-22
· Don Marcotte -20
· Bob Miller -20

If you're curious about what the Flyers have done in their history:

-The Flyers went from 93-94 to 07-08 without six 20+ goalscorers, but made the playoffs all but two of those seasons (93-94 and 06-07). Thus is the DPE.
-The Flyers hit eight 3 times, and were 1 goal from nine 20+ goal scorers in 75-76 and 3 goals away from having ten 20+ goal scorers in 82-83.
-The Flyers had six or more 20+ goal scorers in 18 seasons out of 42 seasons, meaning roughly 43% of the organization's history falls into the category of having six or more 20+ goal scorers.
-The Flyers are on pace for their 19th season with six 20+ goal-scorers this year, but are close to a possible 9.

Flyers had six 13 times:

1972-73 - MacLeish (50), Flett (43), Clarke (37), Dornhoefer (30), Barber (30), Lonsberry (21)
1974-75 - Leach (45), MacLeish (38), Barber (34), Clarke (27), Lonsberry (24), Clement (21)

2007-08 - Briere (31), Knuble (29), Carter (29), Richards (28), Hartnell (24), Lupul (20)
2008-09 - Carter (46), Gagne (34), Richards (30), Hartnell (30), Knuble (27), Lupul (25)

Injuries could play havoc with this. Despite his lack of ice time, I gotta like Z's chances cuz he's at 13 already.

i think the real question here is can shelley make it to 20 games missed due to suspension by the end of the season?

Really? That went right over my head when I did that a couple months ago. Oh well.

I probably missed it because it wasn't a year they had 6+ 20+ goal-scorers.

Then I realized he's actually on the '85-'86 list.

Anyone think Briere AND Carter can hit 40?
Through 46 games:
Briere has 24
Carter has 20

I think briere will definately hit 40
I think if Carter and Giroux continue to generate chemistry, Carter will start putting them in at a higher rate throughout the 2nd half of the season

It's ok, I think personally it's better to have 8 20-goal guys than 1 or 2 40 goalers.

There's a finite number of goals Philly will score, and if that amount is spread out more, that gives better balance.

If Briere and CArter only get 35 instead of 40, and a couple extra Flyers pick up those 10 goals and get themselves into the 20-goal club, that's fine. 35 is nothing to sneeze at.

There IS such a thing as too much balance. One poster pointed out that the year Bruins had eleven 20-goal scorers, they won nothing.

That's because they had the 'many good players but no great players' syndrome.

Philly doesnt have that. This team has clear leaders, not just a bunch of equals.

Briere and Carter already in
Giroux 18
Richards 17
Harts 16
Z still at 14

Behind them all Leino and JVR at 11

OK I think six of them .. even the inconsistent Zherdev ... will get in.

Why are Leino and JVR scoring so few goals? Eleven is a looong way from 20. Will they make it?

I wouldn't say it's 'common'.... but it is not THAT big a deal for a team to have six players score more than 20 goals. EIght would be exceptional tho. Will it happen?
