Going to be tough without Manny.

Red Wing games hold a special place in Vancouver's schedule. It's not just because they are a measuring stick, but also becuase Gillis has said this team is built on the Wings' model. I hope the team can put together an effort on Wednesday, but the ghastly injury to Malhotra is pretty devastating. It might take a while before the team clicks again, if it's going to.

Malhotra was the engine that drove the third line, often the Canuck's most effective unit. The chances of replacement are nill, nobody currently on the team has Malhotra's skill set. It has been known since training camp that the Canucks are weak at center depth, playing with three regular centers all season. The team hasn't suffered from it. Perhaps if an adequete fill-in emerges they can continue, unabated, but the odds are kind of long.

Most likely, IMO, is that there is a period of adjustment until the end of the season. The Canucks have clinched a playoff spot, giving them the luxery of trying different looks until then. Raymond (!) looked good at 4c. The new guys are fitting in. The D is getting healthy. Salo is beginning to catch up. These factors can't offset the loss of Malhotra, but can be counted as positives.

Detroit might serve as an "all hands on deck" battle where everybody plays like hell to overcome stuff, too.

I would say that Jannik is the engine, but Manny was the steering, GPS, headlights, and gas and brake pedals. And transmission.

Raffi is the bumpers.

The Wings are also missing key players. Fransen and Datsyuk are both expected to sit so the theme for this game should be rising above adversity.

Poor Manny. He was having a Selke type year and getting some long deserved recognition. But contrary to some opinions I don't think his absence necessarily sinks our playoff chances. If our top players bring their A-game then we should be able to get by with Sedin, Kelser, Lapierre down the middle. This team should still be able to run a great PP. If we can pick up the 5 on 5 play (like last season) the drop off in the PK should not be fatal.

I have a feeling Raymond will be on the 3rd line tonight in place of Torres, he may even start there. He was one of our best skaters in the Phoenix game and by the end he was up there playing with LaPierre and Hansen.

Defencemen Kevin Bieksa will return to the lineup one month after breaking his foot, but the National Hockey League team is keeping minor-league call-up Chris Tanev for their defence. Coach Alain Vigneault could go with seven defenceman against the Wings, or even keep Tanev in the lineup as one of six blueliners while scratching Keith Ballard.

I love how the notion of sitting Rome doesn't even get consideration anymore.

Glad to hear Danny will play! Congratulations to him and Marinette.

I expect Raymond to look great, make it back to the 2nd line, and look awful again. He'll probably look better next year when he has an entire off-season to adjust his gamestyle to suit Kesler. He doesn't strike me as a player that adjusts much on the fly

We need a win in this to keep our confidence in ourselves going(after losing Manny).

To be fair--this one time--Ballard is apparently nursing a few injuries. It would actually be logical to give him some rest time in advance of the playoffs.

However, there is absolutely no other reason on this earth that Rome should play over Ballard.

I don't see how anyone can possibly think we're a better team with Rome and Tanev in the line-up over Ballard; unless of course we're letting Ballard rest up for the playoffs, which would make sense. But I mean, the reason these depth guys are looking half-way decent in my opinion is because Ballard is down there anchoring the bottom pairing. Tanev has looked pretty lost when not paired with Ballard. Rome-Tanev has been downright brutal when tried.
