With another pair of back-to-backs this weekend, safe money says the Caps will need a win tonight against a team playing a strong spoiler role at the moment to have a realistic shot at toppling Philadelphia and landing home ice for the playoffs.
I don't see why. Ottawa has been playing very well since its goaltending solidified, guys started competing for jobs next year, and all the pressure evaporated. They are adopting a classic spoiler role for the last ten games of the season. They took out a red-hot Rangers team last night. Fortunately, they ought to be fatigued, but that's about the only upside. Ottawa is a tough out these days, much like the Islanders. They are 6-4 over their last ten games, standing toe to toe with some of the better teams in the conference.
Does anyone know off the top of their head how many points the caps need to clinch the Division?
They need their points gained plus Tampa's points lost from here on out to equal at least 12.
While the actual number is 12, it's really more like 11, since the Caps will most likely have the first tiebreaker (currently 39 regulation wins to Tampa's 33) and have already locked up the second tiebreaker (head-to-head with Tampa).
Senators played a tough game last night. Caps are not feeling the pressure. Caps win. Caps wont get the 1 spot anyway. The best chance to effect their playoff outcome would be by beating Montreal the nxt night
