Andrei Markov (6.500)
James Wisniewski (4.500)
P.K. Subban (0.875)
Josh Gorges (2.250)
Hal Gill (2.250)
Brent Sopel (2.250)
Alexei Emelin (0.875)

That to me would be a really solid defence. Maybe add another hard hitter from somewhere...
wow this is magic

I think Sopel is going to have a hard time getting that much. I wouldn't be suprised to see him sign in Chicago for less than a million.

What happened to Spacek?

No more Gill please.

Where's Weber? I haven't given up on him. He needs a chance to play a 5/6 role with a veteran by his side instead of being stuck with a Picard. And keeping him on the right side would help.

I try to envision what a D core would look like without Markov because of the inevitable and I don't like what this one looks like without Markov. After Subban there'd be a bunch of one dimensional d-men left over. Emelin may be another multi tasker but will be inexperienced at the NHL level. Spacek is more of a two way d-man too if healthy. LOL

Actually no, he was last year with CSKA, but not this season, and he also got traded to AK Bars Kazan in December.

Article on Emelin on RueFrontenac :
Canadiens will negociate with Emelin

- It tells us that Don Meehan is his NA agent
- They will start negociations after World Championships
- It's the third time they will try to reach a deal
- Gauthier already had discussions with Meehan regarding Emelin
I have to admit that having Meehan as his agent makes a big difference. Emelin getting Meehan to be his agent can mean only one thing: he truly wants to play in the NHL. That's good news because it means that if nothing else, he becomes a viable trading piece for us. So if talks fall apart at the end of the season, and we realize that we're not going to be able to sign him, another team will most surely be interested in his services, and will probably try to pry him away from us.

That said, there's one thing i don't know and can't find information on: How much longer do we have Emelin's NHL rights? i'm always a bit confused on how rights to KHL players work. I guess if we still have the rights to Korneev and Perezhogin( i think?) than we should still have the rights to Emelin for a while yet, but i'm just speculating.

If Emelin comes over and has a good training camp with us, Weber will be traded, or should be anyway for another Ryan White type player. We currently have too many young, small offensive type D-man in on our team, and not young defensive-type D. With Subban, and maybe both Markov and Wisniewski next year, Weber becomes a bit obsolete, and doesn't give is the balance we need on D. Emelin is quite bigger than Weber, and way more physical. He may take half a season to adjust to the NHL, but I think he's much more of a player we need on the team than Weber. Ideally this is what I think would be the best case scenario for our D next year:

Markov-Gorges
Subban-Gill
Wisniewski-Emelin
Spacek
Carle

We'd probably start the season with Markov out, but come playoff time that year, that D would be perfectly balanced in my opinion--and if Emelin doesn't do well, well Spacek is more than qualified to get the job done. I'd like to see Gill on this team until Tinordi comes up, or somewhere close to it. Hamrlik is great but i'd like to start getting younger on D.

Not saying the line-up is bad, but that's the exact opposite of an overhaul.
From the defense at the start of the year it's an overhaul. Spacek and Hamrlik, who eat more minutes than any other pair, out. Sopel, Wisniewski, and Emelin in.

I think Gill should be kept, on a short term contract, to play in his rightful place on the third pairing and on the PK.

It depends with Weber, if we re-sign Markov then our needs lean towards Emelin. If he doesn't re-sign then I think they'd keep working on Weber.

If he has a strong showing at the WC, I'd bet the Habs ramp up negotiations then. And if it's over that return clause, I'd give it to him. Make his family feel more comfortable coming over. Put him in the same role Picard has and ease him in. I think he could be a quality dman to have after an adjustment period. And if he doesn't work out he goes back to russia and there are no more what ifs.

From my understanding the big difference from prior negociations is that Yemelin is now at a level where it's pretty safe to assume that he can step into the Habs roster next year with very few hiccups. Before that he was still in development and would have probably needed AHL seasoning where it makes it a huge financial loss for the player, getting a 60-80k AHL salary vs 2 mil in the KHL. I think at even money he'd probably want to come over and try the NHL game for potential bigger bucks down the line plus it's the best league in the world. If he comes over and fails he can always go back home and play another 10-12 years there.

Beaten down.

Fits into our team's fighting style.

To Emelin's defense, Svitov is pretty ****ing tough.
