Started watching about 10 minutes ago. They did a piece on Merrill, basically just talking about him, and the sound went out for the entire thing

Merrill is so poised. He moves at a different pace than everyone else on the ice. Ice veins. He's such a great net presence in the defensive zone. Always knows exactly what to do with the puck to get it out of trouble.

This is by far my favorite aspect about him. He needs to fill out his frame, work on footspeed, ect., but he is the opposite of a grenade handler with the puck. It will be interesting to see how that poise translates to the NHL where you have to be much quicker with your decisions.

Scott Wedgewood just stopped 29 of 31 shots as #6 Plymouth Whalers beat #3 Kitchener Rangers 3-2 in OT. He was the 1st Star. Plymouth now leads the series 2-0.

Go Wedge!

Wow Michigan held on at the end 2-1, good game. Merrill was the best player out there from the small amount of game I saw tonight, along with Hagelin. He's flawless positionally and with his stickwork. His skating is also very impressive for a man of his size; very fluid, nice stride. I changed my earlier statment that he should come out and play in the AHL all season. I want him to stay and develop his offense more.

Point per game player as sophmore defensman?..tehe.

oh yeah pipe dream, but hey its possible..maybe more like wishful thinking, but wouldnt that be sick. ha

It's great to see wedge playing well. Hopefully he can steal the series from a great Kitchener team.

Not our prospect, but ******* Ben Scrivens has a .928 sv% in 29 games in the AHL.

Wish we signed him.

I was calling for Lou to sign Scrivens too, he would have thrived in our system. Oh well.

A nice piece on Merrill

Quote:
A 6-foot-3, 209-pound defenseman from Brighton, Mich., Merrill certainly has done that during his freshman season. "I watched him develop, but … I didn't think he was as good as he is," Wolverines coach Red Berenson said. "He's come in and he's surprised me at how good he was, how ready he was."

[...]

Merrill has contributed seven goals and 16 assists. His 23 points rank fourth among the Wolverines, No. 1 among Michigan's defensemen.

"He's a young kid, but he doesn't play like a young kid," Langlais said. "He's got a good head on his shoulders, a very intelligent hockey player. He's played like a veteran all year, and he's had to. He's really stepped up to the plate."

Berenson compares Merrill's style with that of Detroit Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom.

Merrill "just does the right thing with the puck, he's in good position, he's really a smart, smart player," Berenson said. "He knows how to play the game, and that's so special. It's hard to teach him a lot. He's just going to get better every year."

edit: didn't know it was posted in the previous thread, but regardless, a cool read, good to hear Merrill getting all of this praise

Wedge has had an absurd number of saves in each of the games so far. Nice to see him stepping up when it matters.
