Sorry guys.
Yes, that's it. Sadly.

Luckily there will be no long term consequences according to the doctors that examined him.

Not official but hearing Kopitar has broken bone and torn ligament but WON'T need surgery. Expect official word after kings land in Edmonton

Oh no. Worst case scenario. If the ligament/tendon is torn, then the chances of surgery are much, much higher and would definitely sideline him through the playoffs.

edit: Google translate (on the linked article) says that Kopi will be "sewed up" which I thought meant surgery. I trust Helene more than Google Translate.

edit2: Torn ligaments in the ankle usually require surgery.

At this point as Kings fan I will take this, no long term consequences is very good
news. Sucks for this years playoff's but this team is being built to compete for years to come.

Sorry guys.

ps. Doctors in LA assured him that there will be no repercussion from this injury for his further career.

pps. Slovenian nation team PR guy also said: “Kopitar will meanwhile stay in LA where he will begin with preparations for next season whenever that will be possible. ”
One ligament that is attached to the ankle is torn and he needs surgery

For playoff after this information there is minimum chance. There will be no surgery, the'll just connect (sew?) ligament back together this week and after that only natural rehabilitation.

According to the statement from press announcer of Slovenian hockey federation there will be no rush for playing this season, focus is already on next season.

After reading Kopitar sr. statements my moral was indeed much higher, but after a quick research, I came to the conclusion that a "broken ankle" is same as a "broken fibula above the ankle"

When fibula is broken just above ankle it's called "lateral malleolus" and it does have recovery time of 6-8 weeks (at least for normal people)

On positive note recovery is/should almost full with no or very little problems after it(with adequate recovery process)

It looks like we just have to make WC finale

EDIT:
Just saw slovenian article and it sucks...

At least he should be fine for next year

Hell, now we have to beat them all without him...

As long as it is close to definite this won't affect him long term, I am okay with this. Though I wish Kopi a fast recovery of course.

I'm actually kinda excited to see the drive of our team' knowing they are missing their star (or to be fair, a couple of them). I still believe.

Go Kings Go, we want Edmonton!

If they are saying that his knee is okay that is the best news coming out of this mess.

Silver lining (if there is one) is he will probably spend the entire summer in LA getting ready for next season.

This is about as bad as it gets. I fractured my fibula and tore ligaments requiring surgery playing hockey, in a somewhat similar fall as Kopi. We don't know the severity of the break (mine required 6 screws) and we don't know how many ligaments were torn (I had 3 torn- which required a lateral pin through my ankle to hold everything together.) After 2 surgeries, $50k in medical expenses, 4 months on crutches, and 6 additional months of rehab I was able to play hockey again.

Ankles are scarier than knees. My foot specialist told me that the medical profession is about 15 years behind knees in regards to understanding on the joint and area around that joint. One problem is that the ankle is unique-- it is the only joint that is weight bearing and moves in 3 dimensions. (The knee only moves in 2 dimension.)

Best case scenario: Kopi has a hairline fracture which doesn't require screws to set the bone and only 1 ligament is torn.

Wild card idea question?

Can the Kings sign a free agent from another league (Swedish, Russia, etc) to a contract for this year - if he were released by his team?

Could that player then be eligible for the playoffs?

It is already confirmed that is torn only one ligament.

Alpa: I really don't see sewing the same way as surgery.

I can't believe people were actually holding out hope that he might return. Did you guys see his friggin ankle snap? That is the same thing that happened to Williams last year. I'd be surprised if he is 100% at the start of next year.

Surgery to me is ..opening up skin to perform medical operations if you follow me. I would be surprised if I'm wrong.

I'm not trying to be a wize guy.

He would be subject to waivers if he is currently playing overseas.

Bill Guerin and Owen Nolan are the only guys i could think of that remain unsigned and are not playing overseas.

Broken ankles take far less time to heal than a broken tibia or fibula. 6 weeks is typical for the ankle. The tibia and fibula can take 10-25 weeks depending on severity of the break. If it's indeed one of those two bones, then he's definitely done for the season.

He's got his youth going for him... that should help speed up the healing.

Healing is only part of the process. Wait until he gets back out on the ice in full contact with NHL caliber players. Look at how Sturm played this year.

I believe Kopi's dad said it was the fibula.

From past experience, the torn ligaments are the driver of recovery time rather than the actual breaks themselves.
