RJ Umberger to Pittsburgh

Now that Pittsburgh has Neal and Kunitz on the left and Kennedy turning into a solid 2nd liner, RJ could perfectly fill the need for a top line RW.

What does Pittsburgh have to give to CBJ to get Umberger?

RJ means too much to CBJ to give him away for something less than overpayment.

It would be something unreasonable, I would have to think. He's one of those players who is more valuable to his team than what they would most likely get for him. He's a very good all-around player. Can put up roughly 25-25-50 and kill penalties, play physical, fill a leader role, basically anything, and he has the veteran experience to go along with it.

It would have made more sense if you still had Goligoski.

Kunitz-Crosby-Umberger
Neal-Malkin-Jeffrey
Cooke-Staal-TK
Adams-Vitale-Johnson

Or if the Kunitz line stays together minus TK.

Neal-Crosby-Malkin
Kunitz-Staal-Umberger
Jeffrey-Letestu-TK
Cooke-Vitale-Adams

Or if you wanna roll 3 crazy lines.

Neal-Crosby-Malkin
Jeffrey-Staal-TK
Kunitz-Letestu-Umberger
Cooke-Vitale-Adams

Pens could target him if he isn't re-signed by the deadline next season. He'll be a rental in that scenario. Everybody knows the Pens brass loves the guy. It's one of the worst kept secrets out there, but he won't be available in the short-term barring severe overpayment and I'd imagine Columbus will look to re-sign him before his contract expires anyway. If not Shero will definitely go after him hard at next years deadline or in UFA.

Pens top 6 for next year looks good regardless, imo. Kunitz Staal Kennedy has been such a good line that it may allow them to play Sid & Geno together for longer stretches than ever.

Neal Crosby Malkin
Kunitz Staal Kennedy
Cooke Letestu Johnson/UFA
Jeffrey Vitale Adams/UFA

I've heard people that cover the Jackets and Penguins over the years mention how much the Pens brass loves Umberger. He's the prototypical Shero/Bylsma style of player so it's not surprising when that gets reported from time to time.

He's the epitome of what Shero and Bylsma absolutely love in a player. Gives 110%, great locker room guy, hard on the puck and in the corners, goes to the front of the net, and is more than reliable in his own end of the ice. He can play on any line due to his great versatility — 1st line, 3rd line, 1st PP, PK, you name it.

Also, what CH said, as well.

We'd need to shed alotta salary to bring in his 3.75 cap hit. He does only have one more year so it could be a possible avenue for shero to explore although I doubt it's doable. RW's are something we need but a right hand shot even more so for the PP which he unfortuantely is not. One more top 6 forward and we can run this....

Neal-Crosby-Malkin
Kunitz-Staal-Umberger
Tangradi-Letestu-Kennedy

or

Neal-Crosby-XXX
Tangradi-Malkin-Umberger
Kunitz-Staal-Kennedy

If they picked him up...and the way some players have been playing lately...

Neal - Crosby - Jeffery
Jeffery/Test - Malkin - Umberger
Kunitz - Staal - Kennedy
Adams - Vitale - Tangradi/Talbot

It ****** me off to no end that gilles had to run Tangradi. Screwed his season over and now may not even be able stay here full time next fall. If he could ever crack the top 6 or at least the top 9 then another trade/ufa signing for the right side would make us stupidly dominant.

With these last few games. I hope the KSK line is never broken up. Neal-Crosby duo, Malkin-UFA duo and plug tangradi/jeffrey/letestu in there as third wheels.

He's making 4.5 I doubt they can afford that.

Yep. I'd love him on the Penguins as much as anyone, but his importance in Columbus makes him an overpayment-type player considering the Penguins couldn't be offering any one similar value player.

I like Umberger. As previously said, his style of play fits the Dan Bylsma and Ray Shero system to a tee. But also as previously said, it'd cost too much to bring him over. That's not even factoring in the cap situation.

What the Pens could use (but not desperately need) is a RH winger who isn't making big money. Setoguchi, Stafford, Wheeler, etc... come to mind.

Also, isn't RJ either a C or LW? Not RW?

The thing they like most about him is his tatoo.

He can, and has played, all three forward positions. But the Jackets coaching staff prefers him at left wing.

I say a trade such as this would work:

Pens get:
R.J. Umberger
Jake Voracek
Nikita Filatov

Jackets get:
Geno Malkin
Carl Sneep

Our lines next season could be:

Neal-Crosby-Umberger
Kunitz-Staal-Voracek
Cooke-Letestu-Kennedy
Rupp-Talbot-Adams

The 4th line all sign cheap deals just to stay in the burgh!

No reason for CBJ to deal him.

Depends if he wants to re-sign in Columbus or not. I could see him being a potential deadline target, if CBJ can't get him locked up. If he hits free agency, one would have to believe that Pittsburgh would be near the top of his list as a potential destination.

I hate to say it, but I can easily see Umberger deciding he doesn't want to re-sign w/Columbus. Routinely playing out the string at the ends of seasons wouldn't seem to fit with his personality.

Done and done. As inaceptive as Howson has been, he has to jump at the chance of getting that elite center for Nash and push this team to an elite level for once. Malkin is a franchise talent that could push this team by himself.
