Think of it as as a silver lining if the season ends next week. Monty might settle for a two year contract at around his current salary given his less than glorious finish in an otherwise solid season. At the right term and price, there is definitely a place for Monty on the team.

Scott Hannan (32)
Eric Brewer (32)
Joni Pitkanen (27)
Christian Ehrhoff (28)
Jan Hejda (32)
Anton Babchuk (26)
Jonathan Ericsson (27)
Kevin Bieksa (29)

Ehrhoff and Pitkanen are pipe dreams, they'll most likely be re-signed by their respective teams. But guys like Hannan, Brewer and Hejda will bring some rock solid stay-at-home veteran presence to our line-up, something we haven't had at all this year. Jonathan Ericsson seems like he's developing into a solid stay-at-home guy himself, maybe he can really blossom if given a bigger role than he has in Detroit (having to play behind Lidstrom, Rafalski, Stuart and Kronwall). And Babchuk and Bieksa will bring a physical presence, and a big shot from the point (we have a lot of somewhat weak shooter at the point, and I know having a booming shot isn't as important in today's NHL, but it would still be helpful).

After seeing how inconsistent Montador is, I don't want to bother re-signing him anymore. He's not a shut-down guy, and we need one of those. Not to mention he'll still be getting a raise even after his piss-poor play in the playoffs, because of his increased point totals during his stay with Buffalo the past couple seasons. I could see Montador making around 2.2+ million this off-season, which IMO is a huge overpayment for a guy as inconsistent as he is.

Having once been a Pitkanen fan but after some extended viewing, he's so infuriatingly inconsistent that I'd rather they look somewhere else.

Bieksa is another one who has soured -- he still makes just God awful give-aways and turnovers far too often. I'd rather they look at a similar skillset in terms of side and physicality in James Wisniewski.

Hejda is Lydman-esque, plays hard minutes for CBJ and manages to put up some decent +/- on some bad teams through old-fashioned defense-first play. The question would be, can they fit in a guy who's relatively slow of foot and offensively limited when they have Morrisonn on the books for another year.

Ehrhoff is probably a pipedream. It wouldn't surprise to see Vancouver re-up him before he hits free agency.

Brewer and Hannan... not keen one way or another.

Babchuk is someone once rumored as a player of interest for Regier, so depending on what they do around their current puck movers/puck shooters, there might be interest there.

Nothing seems to be a given when it comes to Regier - on one hand, his penchant for overvaluing his own players is well-known. On the other hand, his history with UFAs being let go is also well-documented. My gut feeling is that the Sabres will try to solve some of their greater priorities this summer with the intent of letting Montador test the waters before eventually offering him a new deal if he's still not signed by another team.

Overachievers are always hard to gauge the true value of and Montador, in his 2 years as a Sabre, has definitely played better than his career track record shows - but he's had several downswings (such as what we've seen in recent weeks) where he reveals what he truly is: a # 5 or 6 defenseman. If Regier and Ruff delude themselves into thinking that his plus-minus justifies using him in a top 4 role and commensurate contract/salary, it'd be a huge mistake IMO.

I'd rather take my lumps with the young defensemen developing because all of them look to become better than Montador ever was or will be.

I'm hoping that Wisniewski hits the market and that the Sabres do consider him - not only is he an underrated power-play performer but he has a lot of character, physical tenacity and grit in sticking up for his teammates, something that was expected of both Montador and Morrisonn but has been rarely seen from either.

I must have missed Wisniewski when looking through UFAs to be on Capgeek. He's another guy I'd love to see us get. I'd probably put him in the "pipe dream" category though. He seems to love playing for Montreal.

My only gripe if we sign Wiz is that we'd have too many offensive defensemen. Myers, Leopold, Sekera, Gragnani AND Wisniewski is just too much. We need at least one stay at home guy (something neither of Montador or Morrisonn are very good at, and Weber and Butler are still too green to be legit consistent shut-down guys). I also wanna see Gragnani make the line-up to start next year. He has his bad moments but I think he'll end up being a better version of Leopold someday.

Butler - Myers
Leopold - Wisniewski
Sekera - Weber
* Gragnani

That would be an upgrade to our current d-core though.

Wisniewski would be a welcomed addition, if not I would like to see a trade for a RH'ed D-man... Grags derserves a serious look to in Training Camp..

MAG has been one of our best Ds this series. I can't remember hardly any bad plays hes made since being called up. He has arrived, and he is in my top 6 next season. He is an ideal young bottom pairing / pp specialist.

Myers Butler
Leo Reggie
MAG Weber
ShaMo (unfortunately)

Use money not spent on D to find some forwards that can actually generate in the playoffs. Not even kidding, I want Ennis out of the top 6 for the forseeable future. Switch him with Gerbe who actually can do something. At the very least,

Vanek Richards Stafford
Gerbe Roy Pominville
Ennis Hecht Boyes
Cody Goose Kaleta

Even that makes me freakin' worried because one center injury means Boyes goes back to C and LINE DOWN. Ideally we sign another bottom pairing player who normally takes Kaleta's spot on the 4th line, but moves up to 3C in the event of an injury.

That he does - at least, according to what I saw and heard from him in one of the "My Canadiens" documentaries that NHL Network airs from time to time.

While Wisniewksi has got some good offensive skills and a great shot, he hardly falls into the pattern of a M / L / S / MAG. I think he falls more into the two-way defender like Lydman and Tallinder were - strong skaters, solid defensively with a modicum of offensive skill.

Besides, in Ruff's system that relies on the defensemen so much, a "stay-at-home" defenseman is more of a detriment than a benefit. Even someone like Weber, who thrived in the AHL as a defensive-minded guy, has evolved into someone with solid passing and breakout abilities.

Some updates:

Chain wants to trade for Regehr
'tip likes Wisniewski
I want a defenseman who can actually lead the rush

The only thing to discuss when it comes to Brad Richards is how much money we should be throwing at him.

That's my issue with him. The guy has been around for a while and has NEVER had a season really even close to this good.

We can spend something like $4-$4.5Mish on a defenseman if we don't want to hamstring ourselves when it comes to Richards.

First things first, who's off our roster next year? Grier for sure, he's hit the end unfortunately. I really am not up to date on contract statuses.

I watch the Habs a lot. Wiz will be targeted by the Leafs if he doesn't resign with Montreal. Buffalo needs to target: Ericsson, Brewer or Bieska, hopefully one of them bites.

Forward wise (realistically): Laich, Upshall and Glencross.

Off of that list, the one name that jumps out is jason Arnott. Need leadership, can win draws.

I think a d-man like Gill is strongly needed, but id kill for Robyn Regehr or Jason Spezza then fill the other with a UFA

GIVE ME BIEKSA FOR SURE!!!

Other than that, IDK I need to do some scouting.
As far as who I would like to see gone...

Grier
Montador
Connolly
Butler

Question Marks: Our entire top 6. Seriously way to not show up for a 2nd straight season, and we cant even blame Roy this year.

The last thing we need is to get slower, and Jason Arnott was slow in 2002.
