We're not "freeing" Nabokov. He's getting his ass tolled and traded.

To be fair, all the Isles did was give the guy a shot. Montoya was just as good in his limited action in PHX, which is the only other NHL action he's ever been given. The guy was just never given a chance with NYR, even though it was clear to anyone who knew anything about this player's personality that he was never going to buy in to being a longterm AHLer, and that his numbers would reflect it after a while. Sure enough, he had a couple good seasons, and then started to decline when he felt like he was being sat on by an organization that viewed him as nothing more than a human insurance policy and neither wanted to play him in the NHL (at least one season due purely to salary cap issues), nor wanted to trade him.

Toll & Trade him. He will be stuck with that contract for another year or he will never play in the NHL again.

As for the OP, glad Montoya was giving a chance and took advantage of it. IMO GMDM didn't give up on him, but traded him so he would get a chance to play in the NHL and get signed to a contract. He didn't have any (long term) value to the Coyotes other than as a back up in San Antonio. Injuries set him back and slowed his development. I never consider him a bust.

what the hell for?

he screwed himself if he ever wants to play again in the NHL, he'll tell Garth Snow he's willing to be traded wherever Snows sees fit, or he can retire. a year and a half of total inactivity at his age can degrade his skills considerably

So happy for him. Always was a huge fan of his and was sad to see him get an opportunity for a few games in Phoenix and then not again the next year after performing well. Hopefully this is just the start of a long career in the nhl for him

He has a NMC... he could go to the Islanders and ruin the dressing room if he does not get his way.

I would

Then the Isles can suspend him without pay and Nabokov will forever have reputation as loser and lockerroom cancer

He needs to send Nabokov a fruit basket for not showing up and allowing him to get a chance

He'll be traded to where he pleases, but he will be gone nonetheless. He's not getting away that easily.

You know... I feel so lucky as a fan, must be 4 consecutive years in the bottom 5.

Anywho, brings out the humanity seeing a guy get his chance and earn a reward.

Great signing, don't care what the monetary value is.

The only question is...how did the Islanders re-sign the Rangers' property?

Im going to just keep playing, keep giving the team a chance to win and keep contributing, Montoya told the Islanders website. Im a guy that works hard, wants to win and wants to add to the tradition here as a good player and teammate for the New York Islanders.

Guy played his rear off and deserved the extension. I wonder what the money numbers are?

He was traded to Phoenix a couple seasons ago, the Islanders acquired him this year for a 6th round draft pick.

Safe to say there is not an Isles fan around who is not happy with this. Al Montoya really earned his keep and fits in with the team's identity of castoffs reborn.

Psst.. he's played 17 games. He isn't Jesus, even if he does kind of look like him.

At most he'll be an OK backup, but he isn't true NHL material by any means. A full season will show that.
