$400M Development Plan for Bell Centre area

Huge development project around Bell center! Including:

2x44 storeys Condo buildings
25 storey condo building
27-storey office tower

Not sure if this should be on the main Habs board or Montreal off topic, but i think it is interesting and worth discussing. It's hitting the news today as it was announced this afternoon. Check out the links.

They want to build right on top of centenial Plaza!

i think it is a great plan, but building on top of the centenial plaza is not cool. I like where it is and how they did it. to move it now would seem like a waste!

MONTREAL — There are plans in the works to bring new life to the area surrounding the Bell Centre in downtown Montreal.

Cadillac-Fairview, a major real-estate developer based in Toronto, says it's ready to spend up to $400 million to build three large condo towers and an office skyscraper in the neighbourhood.

The three condo towers would house 710 units collectively, and the plans call for two of them to go up at the current site of the Centennial Plaza. That's where fans of the Montreal Canadiens can honour the team by purchasing bricks.

The proposed glass office tower would stand 27 storeys high and be built on St-Antoine. In order to make way for the building, a structure built in the 1950's would have to be torn down, something that is attracting quite a bit of attention from heritage groups.

CTV's Camille Ross says Cadillac-Fairview wants to start marketing the residential units by the end of 2011, and hopes to open the office tower by 2014.

I don't know what to say.. but that looks just BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!

More homes is always a good thing, but I can only imagine the costs of that for owning or renting.. also, I don't know if I'd want to live in that place.. even if it looks amazing. The price is also incredibly high to build.

I also don't know if I like the idea ofPlaza being moved.

I wonder if that TV is going to be used to show Habs games?

Nice concept, but it will probably be filled up by lawyers, rich people, etc. The price of these condos are going to be through the roof.

I'm not sure what to think. I hate the idea of condos in MTL tho.

Isn't there also a commuter train station at that location?

That's very interesting news. Wonder what these condos will go for. As for the Plaza I wouldn't worry, I'm sure they'll leave it as is and build on top. Would be pretty cool to leave home in the morning walking through centennial plaza

The station is near it, but would not be destroyed by the construction of the Condo.

i found a couple more pics in a french article:
http://www.radio-canada.ca/nouvelles...bitation.shtml

and yest the commuter trains station is right there. The AMT has plans to improve the station, but that is a whole other project.

Cadillac Fairview full plan is said to be worth over 1$ Billion, and they will develop some of the land to the south of the bell center.

Cadillac Fairview Corp. Ltd. is also responsible for building the Maple Leaf Square in Toronto

There are condos everywhere in Montreal, it's just that most of them are in 3-4 storey buildings. We don't have a ton of "Toronto Style" condo skyscrapers here..

The government isn't paying anything right? This is all payed by Cadillac Fairview? If so, I'm 100% for it.

Those pics just look stunning. Really loving the screens too lol.

I don't get it. Why build residential units on top/around a sports arena? How does this improve the Bell Center?

Same here, like I said in my earlier post... really wonder if they'd show the game on those screens? Kinda looks like judging by that picture.

So people will pay big money for these condos and live right next to a train station? Wow...

I'd rather something more for the general public (mall, bars, restaurants) etc. Enhance the experience that the Bell Center already offers. Condos in-and-around that area just takes away from the "downtown hockey/sports/concerts/shows/arts" vibe.

Anything to improve that space. It looks like a dump right now.

There will be restos in that condo, since there will also be offices in it..

And the train noises isn't that bad to begin with now.... if it's going to cost near a billion to construct, I think they will do their best to make sure train noises aren't a disturbances.

I'm pretty sure the first pic is exactly where the Condo would be built, I think the 2nd pic is the other location.. but I'm not very sure.

But lik some said, why not use the huge parking lot for the Condos?

exactly! so this is pretty big news. It will also change the skyline of the city, so it will be interesting to see how it develops.

I agree, that lot is hideous like many downtown lots. Im not sure this project will take on that space, but if anything goes there, they will need to build supplemental parking for the bell center. The lot south of the bell center should also be affected by the project, so i expect large amount of underground parking as a result.

thre are also large lots on university that will be converted to building in the future as part of the University street project, but again that is a whole other story.
