How would you fix the PP?

List your set up and roles of each player on a 1st PP unit.

----- Staal----
Kennedy Kovalev
Crosby Letang

From now on Staal's role is net front presence and nothing else.

Kovalev and kennedy on their offwings set up for one timers. Have shown the most puck poise on the halfwall of anyone.

Letang and Sid are who Id trust most at the points to make the difficult elevated passes to one another when pressured and not be liabilities with their speed.

Replace kovy with malkin next year.

Set up a 4 man umbrella and stick Rupp or Staal in front of the net. Fire away, and HIT THE ****ING NET!

If an NHL coaching staff can't fix it, we wont be able to either.

That said, Martin shouldn't be on the first unit. He's got about the weakest shot on the team, and is an absolute non-threat to shoot the puck. Opposing teams know this and don't respect his shot.

------ Staal/Kunitz------
-------------------Neal
Kennedy ---------Kovalev
-------Letang-----------

-------Kunitz/Staal-------
-------------------Comrie/Conner/Whoever
Letestu------------Martin
---------Niskanen--------

But I'd be happy with any PP that has players on their offwing and doesn't include Martin at the top of the umbrella.

We can start by using players right. Staal needs to be in front, Martin needs to be on the 2nd unit and a right hand shot needs to be on the corner boards.

If a point shot is not available instead of the dmen passing the puck back and forth I think the puck should be moved down low and try something there. Also get Martin off the first PP unit at least. He is doesn`t have a good shot and is no threat to shoot from the point and the opposition knows this.

Step 2: Add Crosby to it.

Honestly, there's really not much that can be done with the current group of players. They all know their roles, they're just not hitting the net.

I'm by no means an expert, but unless the team you're playing is the Canucks or the Penguins, you should have 2 shots on goal AT MINIMUM, every single PP opportunity.

I'm on the same page but I would want Staal in front of the net mostly because I want a center out there for face offs. Then put Neal in the high slot...

Staal (net front)----------------Kovalev (Goal line)
Kennedy (Half boards)---Neal (High slot)
---------------------------------Letang (point)

Plays would be worked out of the right corner and Kovys the QB. Plays would be set up for Neal getting off shots in the high slot but if a defender over plays him it could allow some roon for Kovy to get to the net. Or if teams start taking away Neals shooting lane he could make a bang, bang pass to TK for a one timer. That would be a fragmented way to go cross box but the Neal pass has to be done in the blink of an eye.

The main points:

-Staal helps out either winger down low, gets the puck to the point, and moves back to the front of the net

-Nobody strays far away from their defined zone, but always moves in towards the puck within their zone. For example, if the puck is on the TK side in the corner, Neal comes to the center of the ice, Michalek and Letang both move in- far enough for a faster one timer, but not so far they can't keep the puck in the zone.

-Neal acts as a sort of rover. Instead of staying in the middle of the zone like they sometimes have guys doing, he never stops skating. Doing figure 8s, whatever, trying to find space for himself in the middle of the zone, or on his side of the ice. Constant movement

-No defensemen switching for one timers

-TK is basically the guy who runs it all. The puck goes through him

-Finally, there are 3 ideal plays. 1, Pass from Neal to the point for a one timer with Staal blocking the goalie's vision. 2, a TK pass to Neal in the center for a one timer. 3, a Neal shot deflected off the goalies pads to TK for a one timer.

^ this. Completely correct. We're not writing the Magna Carta here people. Put people where they can one time the puck and create traffic in front. Dear god, our PP is so awful because the Pens insist on using people where they clearly don't belong. (Martin?)

Strip the PP responsibilities of everyone in the coaching staff this summer and go out and find an assistant strictly to run the power play. We have a PK guy in Granato, and that worked out well. Now, let's find a PP guy.

Obviously nobody in this organization knows how to run a competent power play, so we need to find someone who does. A legitimate power play, not even tops in the league but a respectable one, could really help this team.

Just take a penalty right off the faceoff and play 4 on 4.

Letang and Kovy are both thinking "pass first". Both of them just aren't one-timing the puck. Its not required to always one time the puck on net but we rarely are doing it. Instead we methodically work the puck around and try pass thru the slot?? Its a simple yet weird strategy thats proven ineffective.

If it were me I'd have Kunitz in front of the net since he's the best at deflectiing shots and possible the best at screening the goalie, I'd have Neal on the left wing boards and Letestu on the right wing boards. Dont put Neal in the crease, a spot he admits himself that he's not really effective at. Let him shot rebounds from the circles.

Let Letestu playmake and feed pucks out to the point from the right wing circle. He's probably our best face off center right now even though he wasn't good against Tampa.

Leave Kovy out of the equation for now. For all his talent he's always looking to make that highlight reel pass across the slot or giving too slow a pass out to the point for our Dmen to have a chance to one time.

As it stand right now I'd rather see Michalek at the point. He has a nice shot. He's thinking "gonna one time this puck" most of the time. He usually get the pucks on net and usually keeps it down so its redirectable.

When Letang was hot he was making up his mind to shoot way before he got the puck. Now he's kind of slipped back into the "well maybe someone else is open for a better chance than me". Yet the entire PP is setup to get the puck out to the point and get a shot at the net and possibly deflect a goal in or pick up a rebound.

There's my long arm chair coaching opinion that probably only makes sense to me. I feel better now though

I don't think we have the current personnel to fix it. I'm under the solid belief that it hasn't really been right since Malone left. We really miss someone that provides legitimate net front presence despite what people think about people we have on our current roster. We don't have a good net front presence at all. We have great shooters, however they choose to either not shoot or shoot at an unscreened goalie.

Conner as a net front presence because of his size. Adams on the half boards as the QB because of his playmaking ability. Rupp and Comrie on the points because of their bombs and they're also fast to prevent breakaways. Engelland in the box to get his quick shot of. Seriously, could they produce any less than what we have out there now.

I'm all for measuring an opponents stick every time we get a pp. If it's acutally an illegal curve, we have 2 minutes of 5 on 3. If it's a legal curve, it's 2 minutes of 4 on 4. Win win all the way.

I agree with this. It was greatly hidden by the fact that Gonchar Crosby and Malkin could just superstar their way to a decent powerplay despite it being a mess.

Umbrella up high, 3 men

------------Net----------
----Staal/Neal/Kunitz/Crosby

TK--------------------Kovy

---------Tanger or maybe michalek for 2nd unit

3 shooting points, 2 guys in front with good hands down low, the 2 guys up high on the wing could pinch for support to win a battle if needed. if anything, this setup would generate more shots.
