Grabo and Kule's next contracts

Their contracts expire after next season. Do we give them true top 6 money? I'm thinking 5 years 4.5 mil per would be a bargain.

Different situations.
Grabo will be a UFA and Kuli a RFA.
Burke can wait until the end of the season with Kuli and see how he progresses. Burke cant really afford to do that with Grabo.

I would like to see how the two of them will do next year before unloading a ton of money on their next contracts.

As of right now I would pay the following:

Mikhail Grabovski - 3 years @ 3.75
Nikolai Kulemin - 3 years @ 2.900

4.5 mil would be an overpayment if they're still RFA's, and I'm pretty sure at least Kulemin will be. I'm not 100 % sure if they're still going to be RFA's or not, but if they are and their play stays at this years leve I'd say 3.25 m - 3.75 m each. If they're UFA's your 4.5m estimate's probably what they'd get on the open market, but they might take a discount to stay in TO.

Kulemin will be an RFA. Grabovski will be an UFA.

I think Burke will keep one, trade the other...

Hopefully he Keeps Kulemin... and get a good return from Grabovski at the TDL...

There is a ton of time to figure this out, no need to worry about these things right now.

there's no way they get 4.5mil/year based on this one season

but if they continue to perform at this level for another 2 years I wouldn't be surprised to see them get paid the amount you say

For Grabo, the UFA, I think he's enjoying his time here in TO. Based on his experience in Mtl, where he says he never wants to go back to, I think he is very happy playing here. When he left Mtl, they were saying how he's terrible for the dressing room, yada yada, I'm not sure if the demand is too great for him. He may be one of those guys who can be a great fit in one city, but a negative in another. Some teams will obviously have interest in him and I think it would be smart for Burke to re-sign him a few weeks before the trade deadline at something like 3 years @ 3.50 or 3.75.

For Kuley, RFA, we will have much more leniency as if another team wants him at the end of next season they will have to offer sheet where we can match. So his performance next season will help paint out his extension. I'd guess 3 years at 2.75-3.00-3.25.

Interesting that Kessel gets paid 5.4mil, but 4.5 mil for a guy who plays better at a more important position is out of the question.

i don't think they get the same contract. not in years offered or money.

Kulimin is still rfa so he's not getting grabo money although i would suspect that kulimin will get a longer term deal. i wouldn't be surprised if burke offered him a 4-5 year deal.

Grabo i think is somewhat more replaceable and will get offered a shorter term deal like 3 years.

Hard to speculate on dollar figures hear because although their stats are extreamly impressive i think chemistry inflates their stats significantly and i don't think burke
will overpay for that.

It will be interesting however to see how burke handles it next year.
My guess is burke manages to get a bit of a bargain so far the numbers listed above seem high

We still expect kessel to put up better numbers, plus He is more talented

Im gonna say 3.0 - 3.75 for kule depending how he plays next season

And 3.75 - 4.25 for Grabo also depending on how he plays

Yes, because by that logic... Lashoff and Gunnarson should be getting payed more than Komisarek.... Just because a player is out-producing another player, doesn't mean they should be getting payed just as much. Would you give Schenn Phaneuf type $ right now? No....

BTW, I think Kessel is doing better than Grabovski.... He's been playing a lot better and making less 1 dimensional plays.

We need both.. I wouldn't trade Grabo at the tdl.. The guy is a soldier

Its too early to talk #'s we gotta see next year's stats first..

We need to dump Komisareks contract!!!

IF both Grabo and Kule have similar production or better next year, THEN

Grabo 4.5 (using Derek Roy and Plekanec as comparables)
Kule 4.0 (using Scott Hartnell and Franzen as comparables)

Also consider that Bozaks 3.75Mill contract will be expiring as well so we can more comfortably sign them.. Yes Bozak makes that much :S

$4.0 million sounds appropriate for Kulemin (assuming he'll produce at about the same rate next year). I hope he'll be signed to a 5-6 year deal.

As for Grabo, I guess it all depends on a number of factors, including his own progression next season, if the Leafs will acquire a #1 centre this summer, the development of Kadri, Colborne, and Bozak. I hope there will remain a place for him in 2012.

that contract is heavilly bonus laden, pretty sure bozak hasn't hit all his bonus'.
nevertheless it still impacts the cap.

lock Grabovski up at $4 mil per. there's no reason to get aggressive with Kulemin as he's an RFA - if another team signs him to something really dumb, you can just take the crap-ton of picks as compensation, and if he gets a reasonable offer you can just match it. (if Kulemin will take a contract favorable to us such as $3 mil for 3 years go ahead and sign him before RFA of course.)

I do not expect Grabo to make it past the trade deadline next season in all honesty. It will depend on what we do this off-season though.

No he doesn't.
His actual salary and affect on the cap will be about $962,500.

And his affect on the cap is less than a million.
His cap hit may be higher but the Leafs are also allowed to exceed the cap in the amount of his potential bonuses. Any bonuses he makes (none) will be added at the end of the season or next season if the club fails to have the necessary cap space.

It's be 6 years now, how is it people still don't know this???
