Scrap the Shootout

After becoming the first professional sports league to lose an entire season due to labour stoppage in 2004-2005, it was no secret that the NHL had to come back with a reinvigorated product. The Dead Puck Era that plagued the NHL prior to its longest lockout required tweaks and changes in an effort to revive traditional fans and entice new ones.

There's two things worse than a shootout:

1. a tie
2. the last 10 mins of a game when it's tied and both teams are playing not to lose.

The tied game should finish with a bench clearing brawl.

Cherry said it best.

This is a gimmick. Its okay for the fans to watch from an entertainment perspective but players and teams will miss the playoffs because of this gimmick and that's not right.

he made the analogy of in football they throw a ball through a tire lol

Actually both of those are better than a shootout. The way it is now both teams play the last 10 minutes not to loose a point.

How is a tie worse? At least it's the result of the game decided due to the team playing hockey, not a skills competition.

Agreed, there's nothing more exciting then watching a team that can't afford a tie push for a win!

Edit- Am I the only one that remembers the Devils losing the shootout. DIdn't even play Brodeur that game.

Ever been to an NHL game when they tie? It sucks.

Not to mention kids absolutely love the shootout.

I think most would prefer a tie over a SOL...

Still, shootouts aren't the worst thing in terms of standings, it's the loser points in general. Makes no sense that in a season with 82 games there's a possible 246 points to be given, but the most you can get is 164...Fix that, get rid of OTL/SOL points and make the first tie-breaker ROW and suddenly winning a hockey game becomes all that more important than a skills competition.

Ya, and then the OT is amazing. Not just another 5 mins. of the same boring trying-not-to-lose hockey.

LMAO

If the leafs still had Lombardi and Connolly we would be last in the east and should be so lucky to have an opportunity to make it to overtime.

After a game there's nothing to talk about when there's a tie, the last 15 mins. of the game sucks and it's a terrible, morbid, slow ending.

After the SOL to Boston the other night I played in a men's league, we talked about the shootout forever in the dressing room even when they lost. "Carlyle should do this, Remier should poke check, Bozak the only shooter that has scored, Kadri used to be better". The shootout generates chatter, NHL would be crazy to get rid of it IMO.

I don't mind the shootout, however I'm a fan of 10 minute overtime and the tie for 1 point

Radical solution: bring back ties and adopt soccer's point system.

Scrap the shootout, 5 minutes 4 v 4, 5 minutes 3v3, then 2v2 until someone scores

Keep the shootout, make regulation wins = 3 points.

Solution for having games end in OT.
10 minute period, Teams can only change Players on the fly.

Not a fan of the shootout either, but I really do think most Leaf fans would be more open to it if we actually won some.

Take our current circumstances for example, we make the playoffs if we play .500 hockey for the rest of the year. If we go to OT and there's a chance we could lose out on a point, who's going to see the most icetime? Guys like McClement. Keep it as it is now with the guaranteed point and we still get to see Kadri and Kessel.

I thought that the extra OT point garbage that the NHL started way back was a way to prevent teams from from playing not to loose in OT. In OT teams now focus on the extra point instead of trying to preserve the point they could earn by keeping it a tie.

I HATE the shootout, never liked the idea and never will. Bloody gimmick...

Personally, I think this is the best compromise. Ties do kinda suck, and my kids start each game hoping for a shootout.

p.s. Hi Matteo! (it's tg)
