Well, it's not that hard to believe. I don't think Alfie would want to go out this way, but the guy is getting older. I don't think he wants to go through surgery every summer.
I guess the only positive out of this would be that since this team is in rebuild mode, his retirement wouldn't have too great of an affect on the cap since we likely won't be spending to it for the next couple years.
Alfie has always been an incredibly fast healer. If he does get the surgery, I would expect him to take all the recovery time he needs. If that's a December return, so be it. He will be back to give it a shot and help. If he can not go, then he will a least know it for himself and can be content to have given his best to this organization for as long as he could. I see him taking time off and then coming in the top end (scouting; asst GM sort of thing).
If he does get the surgery and needs extra time, I suspect Spezza gets to wear the C.

Man, it's like I said before, it's like when the family dog gets to be like 12 and you know (s)he's only got a year or two left. Gotta start preparing for Alfie-less Sens...the C will be passed and hopefully his powers with it. I imagine when Spezza gets it, his hair will turn blond and he'll power up to Super-Spezza.
Petersson sure seems to be skating gingerly! He's likely not healthy enough to play in an actual game.
It is difficult to tell from one short clip how he is really skating. They were playing a game of neutral zone shinny and no one was skating particularly hard.
um.. petersson is 20. signing him and playing him will kill a year of his contract. No way in hell ottawa does that with one of their own draft picks. The only reason we do that with the college UFA's is to entice them to come here.

He only burns a year if he plays 10 or more games in a season, I thought.
I'm calling we lose all the games left in the season, our D is pretty bad and the teams we are playing are legit, I say we finish with 70 points and come in 3rd overall in the lottery

sad but true, but kinda not sad if we get the higher pick, but still kinda sad...
Actually, who is even left to play D?
Injured:
Karlsson
Kuba
Carkner
Gonchar
Available:
Phillips
Lee
Wiercioch (AHL)
Benoit (AHL)
Smith (AHL)
Hale (AHL)
Yikes. That defense is scary. And not the cool kind of scary. Scary like you might crap your pants on the school bus kind of scary...

Season as of now, but he wasn't sure about next year quite yet.
These last three games are going to be, uh, interesting to watch.
I think I read somewhere that he was determined to pay next year. I'll post a link if I find it again.
EDIT: Found it...

Instead now, Alfredsson will put the focus on rehabbing during the summer in preparation for training camp next fall. And yes, the Senators captain vowed, he'll be back for a 16th season with the National Hockey League team for whom he has played a modern-franchise record 1,056 games. The 54 games, 17 assists and 31 points he recorded during the current campaign are all career lows, but his tank is hardly running on empty.
Alfredson is nowhere near done. He was the leading scorer when he went down, if we can get a coach who isn't a retard, and limits his icetime and plays him in an offensive role(no PK) he can play for years.
