I'm starting work in Chicago in October and was curious as to what was considered to be the best place to play downtown? Are there waiting lists or any procedures in particular that need to be followed? Any info would be helpful.
I'm looking for a fairly competitive league with a normal time commitment. I played high school in Michigan and I'm just finishing up grad school.
Johnny's Ice House has some pretty great hockey there, actually. You have to try out to make their teams... a lot of former college/junior players go there.
The Edge, Robert Crown Center and Addison Ice Arena are worth looking into for men's leagues (in neighboring Bensenville, Evanston and Addison, respectively). I haven't played there since before I was 18 so I'm not sure what their programs are like... but they're pretty nice facilities so I'm sure they've got different leagues appropriate to skill level.
