Question: Evgeni Nabokov was just released by SKA St. Petersburg

Would you take him?

Yes, the only factor is he would have to clear waivers to play this season. Perfect fit for the Lightning even if they don't sign him. The goalie market is already flooded, just adds one more option.

Umm yea. He'd be better than Ellis.

Releasing Nabokov makes the KHL look stupid now. Signed to a 4 year, 24 million and is released even before the first season is over. Great job.

Nabokov leaves the SKA
Family reasons were behind
SKA St. Petersburg's stellar recruiting Evgeni Nabokov got today an unexpected turn. The four-year contract he signed with the club last summer, was demolished today. Family reasons are alleged to be the cause of the breakup.

Evgeni Nabokov left the NHL and its permanent career in the San Jose Sharks after last season. Instead of investing in a new NHL club, he decided to move back to Russia.

He signed for four years with SKA St. Petersburg in a venture that was supposed to continue until the Olympics at home in Sochi 2014th

But today was all an unexpected turn when SKA chose to send out the press release that the contract with Nabokov is broken. In the short press release refers to family reasons.

35-year-old has throughout the fall has been criticized for his play in his return to Russian hockey. Not least, the recruitment of him at all criticized in that it acquired Czech Olympic and World Cup goalkeeper Jakub Stepanek after the World Cup.

During the autumn, Czech composer also been considered by far the more stable of the two, but Nabokov has still been the one with the most confidence to guard the goal in spite of over three goals per game and the modest recovery percentage of 88.8 in 22 games.

Nabokov was selected to play the Channel One Cup in Russia this weekend. What will happen to his involvement which is very uncertain, also was Nabokov end up next.
The KHL website confirms it's for "family reasons"

Hockey club SKA reports

December 13, by mutual agreement of the parties with regard to family circumstances to terminate the contract between the hockey clubs SKA and goalie Evgeni Nabokov
It'd be an interesting trivia question. Since the lockout, who was the highest paid player taken off of waivers?

We've got like $10 million in cap space. I figure a contract ~$6M (probably less) pro-rated for the season would make him waiver proof.

Then remove one of Smith or Ellis, and we're back at around $5M in space remaining.

Especially if we're getting rid of Smith, we'd in actuality only adding around $3 million in salary.

I'm assuming that the waiver order is previous seasons point total? If that's the case, then we'd be 6th in line.

Edmonton
Toronto
Florida
Columbus
Islanders
Bolts

could be interesting

Unfortunately I believe they use last season's point total only until either November 1st or December 1st.

Ottawa, Chicago (probably will go with Crawford), San Jose (would Nabokov go back?), Dallas (but have money issues).

Below TB in the order is (arguably): EDM, SJ, and CHI.

Edmonton has like 7 goalies, including Khabibulin. SJ may be a problem, but the fact that Nabby has his only NHL history with them may be a saving grace, and while Turco isn't bad, Chicago went with him largely because they didn't have the cap space to comfortably retain Niemi.

Colorado is the wild card.

I don't see Columbus being in. They've got Garon/Mason. They're too 'safe' to mess with right now.

What GMs have done in the past is basically paid certain teams with draft picks to not claim a player.

Would Chicago even be able to fit him under the cap?

I thought about Columbus too, Ottawa looks like a best bet though.

It depends on what Nabby would sign for of course, but Ottawa is ridiculously close to the cap.

Leclaire is their top paid goalie (3.8 million) but who's going to want a guy injured that often?

I don't think he goes to Chicago, mainly because of the play if Crawford lately. I don't know what Nabokov would be demanding money-wise at this point, but Chicago has no room.

Against the Ottawa argument is this tweet:

Quote:
According to reports Nabokov will leave for the US today. His family flew back a few days ago.
http://twitter.com/#!/dchesnokov/sta...45654432178177

Of course it doesn't mean that a Canadian team is automatically excluded, but he is apparently going to the US and not Canada.

2 years 3.5M per sound fair? High enough to prevent other teams from claiming him, low enough to not hurt the cap situation even with Stamkos.

I'd only get him on a 1-year deal because of the circumstances.

This. If he doesn't perform well (oh please god knock on wood) he's off the books this offseason. I wouldn't do anything more than 3 though. Him going to the KHL and coming back has significantly lowered his price tag, which is great for us.

1-2 year deal around 2.5-3.5 per year, 4 at max.

Not just that, but in order to get him back into the league, he'd need to clear waivers first.

A multi-year deal just negates much of the purpose if he is claimed. At least if he's only signed for this year, his impending free agency with the team that claimed him team creates some good chaos for us in the offseason. (most importantly, it would lower the value of all UFA goalies since there would be more of them.)

As to what we'd do with Smith, I hear SKA had a recent job opening.

I think 5mith would do well there, because in Russia: puck stops goalie.

True. Also, if I remember correctly he - very much like Kiprusoff - wants or rather demands to be the #1 guy. There aren't many teams where he would have a good chance or a chance at all to become the starting goalie. Tampa provides that opportunity.
