What an awesome end to the game. We hemmed them in their own zone until 30 seconds left, and then immediately got the puck and scored an ENG.

By the way, this was something I was wondering. Does that technically count as an ENG? Roloson never reached the bench and dived back to try to save the goal.

Yeah I would say that's not technically an empty net goal. Roloson did leave his goal but he never got off the ice, and he attempted to make the save.

It's the $60,000 question and we'll find out soon enough.

I just wish we would wait till the playoff dust settles before we think about retaining Connolly or letting him walk.

This

On the other hand, the good:
Enroth once again
Connolly, for once
Vanek's hat trick
Both Gerbe and Ennis seemed to dominate (from my perspective)
The fight (haha, really)

I'd still rather look for someone else via UFA or trade to fill that 2nd line center role, but Connolly hasn't been that bad overall this season. He was pretty bad in the first half but he's really picked his game up in the second half.
He was also directly responsible for the goal against. Still don't like the guy.

Yeah, Connolly's confidence was sky high after that 2nd period, and it looked like he just thought he could make the perfect play (which he's always been guilty of). At least he's not throwing those blind drop passes anymore. He's looking up the ice for a change, and I'll take that occasional gaff if he's on the ice for 4 goals.

STOP ARGUING, If Carolina loses 1 game we're in. They have to run the table. If we just win a game of these last 2 games were in. We're all Red Wings fans tomorrow.

Awards:
The Good -

- Thomas Vanek scoring three in three different ways in a key game
- Tim Connolly coming up with one of the biggest three point nights of his career
- Pominville winning battles against Hedman on two of the Sabres goals.
- Ruff putting Gerbe-Gaustad-Mancari back together in the second and letting them loose.
- Ennis individual efforts where welcome.
- Old home week -- seeing gaf, bhg, sacre_bleu and a couple of other non-monikered friends was awesome.
- Enroth was again good when he needed to be.
- Hot Yinzer on Yinzer action with Malone-Weber. Granted, I kept saying "Don't get hurt Web... " throughout the fight.
- Butler. On a night when most of the team left their set in the wife's purse, Butler was involved physically.'
- Converting on their extended 5-on-3, even with five forwards out there and begging for a shorthanded chance against.

The Bad -

- Can this team make a bodycheck right now? Other than Matt Ellis' can being thrown into a few people, this was one timid bunch. A near total lack of contact.
- Buffalo didn't blink first in the epic battle of 1-4 vs. 1-4. That was vintage Lemaire vs. Hasek-Era Ruff there.
- Gragnani had his first glaring mistake -- but facing five men back and noone skating hard into the zone, it was almost expected.
- Downie. Other than the ice hurting his butt and Butler slashing him, did he even play?
- Turnover within a few inches of the blueline by Connolly leads directly to the Bolts' second goal within the first minute of the third. For his offensive showing, great... but that was just asinine.

The Ugly -

- At the moment, I've got nothing.

Let's admit it. This team since January has been ****ing FUN.

I have no doubts they would have a chance in any series in the Eastern Conference.

It's been 5 years since I've enjoyed the ride while watching this team.

**** yeah.

I would love to know what Ruff thinks of Vanek's play this year, especially in the 2nd half. The guy has been all over the ice and really stepped up in the leadership department. Ruff took notice in giving him the a but he is continually given less TOI then many other sabres.

These guys aren't quite as talented as that 05-06 team, but other than that, both teams are eerily similar to each other IMHO.

G - Played My Name Is Jonas and TV Party on the juke at JJ's after the game to celebrate

B - The juke didn't have Swords of 1,000 Men

U - The only version of Sabre Dance in the juke is this weird marimba version conducted by Lalo Schifrin

It wasn't too bad. Aside from the phantom crosscheck, there wasn't a whole lot to get upset about. I do think the Sabres got away with a couple offsides in the game though.

Counts as a real goal for Vanek according to NHL.com. As it should, Rolly was on the ice.
