Florida Panthers (29-38-12)
Washington Capitals (47-22-11)

http://capitals.nhl.com/club/preview...id=DL|WSH|home

Quote:
If they can finish with a flourish against Florida, they’ll head into the 2011 postseason as the top-seeded team in the Eastern Conference for a second straight season.

“It’s time right now to be ready for the playoffs,” says Ovechkin. “The best time in your hockey career is coming – the playoffs. You get excited. I think the whole team is getting excited; the fans and the organization, so it’s nice.”

While Washington makes its bid for a second straight first-place finish in the Eastern Conference standings, Florida is playing out the string of another disappointing season. The Panthers have missed the playoffs for the 10th straight season, an NHL record. With 29 wins on the season, the Panthers appear likely to finish with their lowest win total since before the lockout. The Cats concluded the 2003-04 season with just 28 victories.

An Ovechkin tuneup game. I almost pity the cats right now.

If Ovie does go on to put up a show in the playoffs...it'll be something I don't think has been seen in hockey before

I don't recall there ever being a suggestion of a successful rope-a-dope before for a superstar like this.

I would love for this to be true, but fear the backlash incurred should he play less than a redefining game. Even if he continues at his usual PPG playoff pace, he'll get shat on simply for the sake of being shat on.

Hoping for a win. Then the flyers lose their next game vs. Buffalo and then sit AO/Backstrom for last game of the season.

Seeing AO playing live like that last night was something else. That move around Phaneuf was sick and I remember another play where he stumbled but had the presence of mind to drop it back to a trailing Caps player. His goal #300 was unstoppable and fans were booing him and yet oooohing and ahhhhing at the same time.

I've said for a while that he's been sand bagging.

There's no doubt in my mind that many of the star players on the roster have been easing the pace, either directed or not. They realize that they're not in it for the regular season accolades.

As soon as they started to smell the playoffs, they've kicked it into another gear. Backstrom has looked pretty good the last 10 or so. it's no coincidence (though the injury was a bit of a hindrance)

For anyone getting upset? Oh well. If it works, great. If not, then obviously, they're going to be lampooned.

I don't see how a competitive athlete playing a professional sport could ever be sandbagging it. I don't know if that is even in their DNA. These plays know one speed, and that is game speed.

there's a difference between out and out not trying and just saying, meh, this is another game.

thats not true. the knock on varly is that varly has only one speed. when he tries to carry the load of a #1 goalie on a north american schedule his body can't handle it. he breaks down. he doesnt know how to pace himself.

has ov throttled back? his highlight hits this season have been reserved for big games. nowhere to be seen it a typical regular season game.

You guys are basically saying that Ovi is consciously holding himself back, letting his point totals and goals slip, just so he can... what... be healthier in the playoffs? I just find it hard to believe a guy who prides himself in scoring goals would be willing to do that.

I keep thinking of Clinton Portis injuring himself in a preseason game hustling after Cowboy Killa #8 threw an interception. His response after being questioned why he went after the DB was basically because even though its preseason its a game and he only knows how to play hard. I tend to think that holds true for most professional athletes. Especially someone of Ovi's caliber.

football and hockey are two different worlds. if portis had to play a football game on sunday and then another on monday, he would pace himself.

do you think a pitcher that closes and pitches no more than one inning and a starting pitcher throws each pitch with the same level of effort?

So...star players sandbagging, rookie goalies, rookie top D pair, rookie 2nd and 3rd line centers, injuries to high end defensemen and scorers, change in fundamental philosophy...1st place in Eastern conference. Playoffs are what matters and I get that but this maybe should be the Adams year for Boudreau.

I don't think he will get it, but just that he may deserve it more this year than the year he won it.

Basically every interview with Ovie this year has pointed towards it. You might not think it's possible, and who knows if it'll work, but he's basically been winking at reporters all year, and so has BB when asked about Ovie.

It also explains the reported leash on BB "a lot" longer than 8 games.

Gametime decision. I suspect they will sit him again, IMHO.
